I wrote this for another forum and i thought i should share it with with you all
For those of you who don't think paintball is a sport... would this analogy work for your stance? "saying paintball is a sport is the same as saying chess is a sport" ... or badmitten, pool, and ping-pong (remember the USAvsChina games... or how about Forest Gump?)
personally, i like comparing Paintball with Baseball...
You could be out on the field playing with you friends, coworkers, or anyone else walking along who asked if they could join... just a group of people out to have a good time... aahhh, memories. If everyone played that way, would we be calling baseball a sport? I think that's a pretty good question.
The Competitiveness, the competition found and that can be found is what makes Baseball the sport we know. I personally think that is enough to be applied to Paintball.
heh, I still remember some augments i got in way back... over whether or not Baseball was a sport or not (he stood by "soccer replaced baseball as the national pastime")
Remember, Baseball is the only sport were the defenders have the ball.
Another supporting, item for paintball not being a sport, was that after a year or two playing hard-core... you'll be playing like the pros
consider this comparison
Baseball... think of the swing of the bat, as the pull of the trigger
you learn how to swing, like you learn a trigger
and with practice and time, you'll be swinging faster and pulling the trigger faster
both sports involve running, positioning, and teamwork... so we won't do any comparisons with those
Communication... baseball involves more of pre-play communication and drills(double plays) for during play communication
The better comparison of the during play communication would be found with basketball or soccer(or hockey or...) direct communication and prearranged plays
Remember the debate over the classification of the paintball marker (i refuse to say gun)? Whether it is a toy or gun... if it's a gun then it needs to be licensed. If it's a toy, it needs a orange or red tip. I always considered it a piece of sports equipment... like a hockey stick or baseball bat. Sure you could use a bat to break windows or hurt someone, but it's still called a sports item because of it's true legitimate use and not of it's possibilities for a vandal. But then again, that's riding the line that archery does... and while we're at it, is Archery a sport? and how is it more of a sport then paintball? If you have a response to that... mine would be exactly the same as the baseball reference above.(backward strength, aim, stance, breathing control)
hey... if you want to call it a gun... the Olympic triathlon is a sport... skiing and shooting
final thoughts(hey, suddenly i'm jerry springer... inviting arguments and ending with the same line)
Like any of the other athletic activities that we call sports... they're many different levels of Paintball that people play.
Some people would consider are sports... and others people would just call a game... but in both, there'll always be a winner and a loser
