My opinion on "kills"

So Magman 007 you play lacrosse? I used to play lacrosse back in college (10 years ago). At that time it really was in its infancy on the west coast. We had college club teams and we would go play each other. There was alot of cursing and it was sort of this weird sport that people did.

Now it is really exploding. You have high school teams even on the west coast and I hear middle schools are getting lacrosse teams. Here is my point......the game has cleaned up. It is now presented in a professional way and parents get excited about having it in the high school programs (they actually fight to get it into schools that don't have a program). I suppose I am trying to say that if paintball wants to gain in popularity they can learn alot by watching what has happened with lacrosse.

Also Allen you mention that you don't like making sure you are not hurting some ten year old kid. I've got bad news for you......that is what being an adult is all about. We all like an intense game but sometimes it isn't all about what you want at that moment. There is nothing wrong with setting up a "big kid" game and going at it but if you are occasionally need to let up on the trigger finger because you are with a mixed group don't whine. Sometimes it isn't totally about what you want at that moment......

Calling a paintball gun a gun is not slandering the sport nor is it hurting it's image. What hurts paintball's image is people who do paintball drive bys and old people with sticks up their asses who talk smack about it simply because it uses guns even though they know nothing about the history or reason we do it. Slapping a ridiculous politically correct name on our guns does nothing. They hear "marker" but they see gun, because realistically that's what the damn thing is. A marker is a felt tipped pen a gun is something with a grip, trigger, projectile, propellant, and a barrel...

I was suprrized when i got to chile to meet another gringo from oregon who plays lacrosse, i was like, oregon plays lacrosse? when did that happen, and he said it was growing ever so quickly over there, im happy for that!

you are right, paintball needs to follow things like lacrosse. Look at us now, we have the national indor league, the MLL major leauge lacrosse (out door), Highschool teams, respected colleges, and even middle schools playing

LAcrosse needs this. We finally have a respected college doing credits for paintball, that is Michagan. That i feel is awesome

Minimag rockin a marker is a an andjective defining a noun, a marker is somethign that marks something else. In paintball, the "gun" is what is used for the marking. Even the old first guns used were for makeing trees. They truely are markers, and i feel we all need to adopt that saying.

I agree that the drive by people hurt our image even more, and they should be put to justice, but we need to completely shed all the bad things, one of them is being called a gun. I think tippman needs to re think its self a bit here.....

magman007, I just want to give you mad props for that first post. I agree with you 100%.

We can't let these little things go by(bad language during games, vandalism, criminal behavior by some people). Some people on these boards I have seen say that we don't need to worry about our image. I have news for you though, WE DO. We are a very small community of people, and it really wouldn't be all that hard for the government to shut us down. And believe me, there are people out there who would like to see us shut down, and I would hate to see that happen. Even if you so think we are safe, please don't take the risk. Maybe one day paintball will be made illegal, than all you'll be able to do is stand there and say "If I only had been more concerned." Try to say "elimination" or "hit" instead of "kill", and try to say "marker" instead of gun. In reality, these corrected terms are actually the right ones also. I don't see how using the correct terminology with our sport's interest in mind could hurt. Please guys, just do it for the sport of paintball. We all love it, and we would all hate to see it die.

Im not a big fan of "kills" I f I ever talk about who I "killed" I just say "I got him".

I think the part with "kills" is what shys people away from paintball

but the part w/ newbs running around asking if they hit you or me... its the biggest thrill for a new player to hit someone good or bad, its part of the game. I know I am kind of repeating what a lot of people have already said but I am just giving my opinion.

Anyone else say "tagged"? Thats the terminology I use at everyfield. Newbs ask.. did I get you? Yeah..you tagged me right here.. pointing at a spot from the games prior! I like to humor newbs, make them think they got more people out than they did.. that way they'll have reason to keep playing. No one likes to lose or enjoys losing. I figure since they're new, let them "think" they are good.. then as they get more experience and see what really goes on.. they'll know whats up!

I would also hate to see our sport be shut down (obviously) but I don't think calling a paintgun a marker is really going to fix that. It IS a gun, maybe not a firearm but it is an airgun that shoots paint. Why beat around the bush? I say it's better to take the opponents of paintball head on rather than using silly names to hide the fact that we do use paintguns in our sport. I also think that eliminating swearing on the fields will do nothing. Is it just me or does that sound ridiculous? Every major league sport (the most successful ones in fact) have entire teams of jocks with mouths that would make a sailor sick. Stopping foul language is not going to help. What really needs to be done I think, for a start anyway, is for the paintball community to show the government and other opponents that we care about safety. We need to let them know that we don't think doing a drive by painting is acceptable. Things like this I think will have a greater affect on our image rather than calling our paintball guns markers. Nobody who dislikes paintball is going to buy that anyway. They'll see right through it. It says "marker" on the box but it looks just like a gun.

i can't say i agree with the politically correct stance that so many people take to paintball. to me it shoots a projectile, it's a gun. i play alot of woods ball, and we play it in my ROTC battalion, so generally an 'elmination' is a 'kill'. i don't think twice about it, both work. but while i disagree with you magman, i have to give props to your zim sig("invader blood marches through my veins like giant radioactive rubber pants! the pants command me! do not ignore my veins!"). erm, sorry, i digress. i agree with Brak in that it's really more about teamwork than who got the most people, except in extreme circumstances. i had to give total props to our general in the last local scenario game, who eliminated 22 people single handedly in a battle royale that was a nonstop 20 minute firefight. when you're outnumbered 55 to 16, those 22 kills made a big difference.

If its kill, tag, elimination, hit, shot... WHATEVER. I always call my gun... a gun... because thats essentially what it is... it is something that propels an object by pulling a trigger like device... you pull teh trigger... it propels an object, you pull the trigger on the gun, it propels an object...

When your playing, do you tell every person its a marker not a gun, tried to talk like that, and everyone thinks I'm weird. I just call them guns because that is what everyone else calls them... I ask them "What gun you have?" and they respond, I've talked to field owners and such and ask them "Sooo... what... marker do you own?" and they are like "wtf marker? ohhhh gun... yah ... angel ir3" I called up a place I was looking for a pgp, and I said, "do you have any pump paintball markers?" "What... paint... markers... don't think we have any of those... oh paint guns? yah we got these ghost talons..."

When you are out playing paintball having a blast, are you really thinking about how accurate your gun is, how fast it shoots, how short the trigger is, how many elminations you got, if people are calling their markers/guns markers/guns? If people are calling their paint ammo/bullets. No... If you are, you shouldn't be playing paintball, you should be having fun, because that's what its all about.

A little perspective ...

I've been playing a long time, and I've seen new players, particularly younger ones got through the following stages in their game:

1) survive - this usually doesn't last long, gets boring, and thus leads to ...

2) shooting - getting to shoot a lot is fun, watching your paint splat, seeing ppl duck - but it quickly becomes clear that you can shoot a lot and not hit your opponent so then we move to ...

3) making eliminations - this is a big step to the new player, actually making eliminations makes them feel like they are becomming better at the game - and they ARE usually. Eventually though, players realize that it isn't JUST about making eliminations, its about ...

4) tactics - this is where most players spend most of their time - learning good tactics takes lots of work and things don't always go the way you want. tactics are a higher order of play and not everyone gets good at them - doing them well means playing with the same team-mates a lot, and not everyone can do that. Then there is a higher level still ...

5) strategy - very few players (or should I say teams - because at this point it is strictly a team issue) rise to this level. Even the best pro teams use very little strategy - relying on superior individual technique and tactics to win games. Strategy in paintball is the new frontier, there is very little know about it, and little said about it, but it DOES exist, and I believe (my opinion now) that in the future we will see this level of play emerge until paintball teams move with the efficiency of a football team.

So, the point of all this, is give the new players a break, they are at a different level. Teach them by example, let them tell their stories of eliminations, then tell your story of how you crawled the snake, making an opponent expose himself to your team mate (or whatever).

I don't correct every person. I say it myself though, and I correct my friends if they say it. If your feild owners don't understand what you mean by "marker," than they are idiots. Even if you say gun, you sould know what marker means. And you can tell by the second quote that the guy was pretty ignorant about paintball anyway.

I actually do think about how fast and accurate my marker is. That's when I can think about what upgrades I need or if it needs to be tuned up. I do still have fun though, I love paintball, and it gives me a feeling I can't get doing anything else. However, I'm also serious about it too (yes, you can be both).

yeah, my middle school has a lacrosse team, and so did my old high school. we played some really basic games and did drills in gym class too.

I don't care if you brag about your good "kills" but it gets annoying when the guys with the LCDs and crap start bragging about shooting 10 of the newbies on the other team.... yeah, they've got rentals shooting 30 fps slower than your Angel........ that's why I'm getting into pump/stock class and pistol play. It's so fun because you are running around with next to nothing compared to what you carry for a high end semi, and if you manage to shoot out 4 people with 5 shots from the old Sidekick pistol you traded a bag of paint for, then that's cool... (yeah, I did that at a scenario game Sunday, not to brag though )

What I'm saying, is when your ingame... playing with other people... are you once thinking about how accurate or efficient your gun is? I don't... so why do people worry about how fast their gun shoots if they can still shoot people out.
