    It quiets down the barrel.
    It also is supposed to equalize the pressure behind and infront of the ball. While I personally have had better accuracy with ported barrels, some people rave about non-ported barrels.

    It also makes the barrel less efficient. And prettier

      the VERAFIABLE effects are:
      1) less efficient
      2) less noise

      the manufacturers will claim that it makes it more accurate, i dont see how, but they claim it is

        It does nothing for accuracy but does quiet the shot.

          a barrel stops affecting a paintball after the first port from what i understand. so if you have a 12 inch barrel with 8 inches of porting you reall only have a 4 inch effective barrel. you can read about this in toms tech tips here on AO and in APG
