    Oh Great!!!

I hope this doesn't escalate. Tippmann may be getting what they deserve for making realistic paintball guns though. Other than that, aren't most paintball guns brightly colored?

I also find this a little funny: Anyone remember the thread with the argument about realistic looking guns? Well now, who's right now? If they didn't look so real in many cases, this little issue may have never been brought up in New York.

The fake weapons violate a New York law forbidding the sale or ownership of imitation guns that are realistic-looking and are painted black or gray. To be legal, an imitation gun must be unmistakably fake, she said, and must be either brightly colored, fancifully shaped or both.

Add a hopper and you have a fancifully shaped gun. Case dismissed. CYA!

Ms. Dykstra said: "Even if it weren't illegal to possess these, it completely violates common sense. Look at them. Could they look more real? They're really scary. Can you imagine what would happen if somebody went out on the street or down in the subway carrying one of those things?"
Do these people realize paintball guns have been on sale for YEARS and yet you don't see people walking down the street or in the subway carrying them?

The imitation weapons are neither inexpensive nor simple. The cost of one on display yesterday was $250, and descriptions on the box said it was powered by a carbon dioxide device, had a range of 150 feet and included features like sighting devices and a quick-release feeder for ammunition.

they obviously dont know what they are talking about.. they think 250 is expensive hehe.

                    ...

first of all the article is completely biased. i bet the author has an already present anti-gun perspective on things. its all a matter of wording as well. she used words such as ammunition and described the guns as if they had the ability to kill people from ranges of 150 feet by using the scopes. i could just as easily write an article describing how gay paintball (even though i dont think it is of course is ) by simply changing the wording. i also seriously doubt it will be banned since its hard to imagine every paintball business/field closing in NY due to the overwhelming response of the paintball players themselves. and btw if you even try to use the fact that my name is TippmannMan you should just stop while youre at it. my name only comes from the fact that my first marker was a Tippmann. i hate people who try to draw false meanings from things.

additionally. its not like you can identify every gun in existence. you could outfit a paintball marker to function as a gun or even color/design a gun to look like a paintball marker. you cant stop people from getting around the system. the only documented case i have ever seen of paintball violence is a drive by that resulted in the victim being blinded. yes this was a vile act but you cant blame paintball guns alone. come to your senses there are many things that kill and maim. i could beat you to death with a book. stab you with a pencil. you cant make a sterile society. what are you trying to acheive by banning paintball

Just so you know, this isn't just paintball.

NY is looking to pass laws to ban the sale of ALL toy guns, regardless of color, that could be mistaken for real guns.

That means even a bright orange water pistol shaped like a .44 Magnum would be illegal to sell in NY.

I imagine all toy companies are going to be up in arms over this as well, their legal might should help us out.

I saw this in the paper the other day, and didn't even think about paintball, due to the fact it was only supposed to cover toys modeled after realistic guns.

By the way, if you want someone to blame, its airsoft. This was all spawned by a cop almost shooting a kid with an airsoft gun.

They need to get the large groups; NEPL, PPMA, NPPL, and the rest of them and lobby. Hopefully, someone here knows someone there, or has access to them; this is where it starts folks. Once a law is passed, it is hard to revoke it, gut easy to amend it. We need to get to lobbying now; hopefully the storeowner will realize this.

"Sports Authority Inc., a chain of sports-equipment stores, was cited by the city yesterday for selling imitation semiautomatic machine guns that are strikingly similar to the real thing, the Department of Consumer Affairs said."

                              "The fake weapons..."

"The imitation semiautomatics, which are called markers, are not meant to be children's toys, and are used for the war game paintball... in which players try to make it to home base without being blasted by pellets filled with fluorescent goo."

"The imitation weapons are neither inexpensive nor simple... descriptions on the box said it was powered by a carbon dioxide device... included features like sighting devices and a quick-release feeder for ammunition."

The article was obviouly written by a very uninformed person. I hope for paintballs sake that this only appeared on websites and not in the new york times newspaper. im assuming they were talking about a tippmann A-5, which, to me, LOOKS NOTHING LIKE A REAL GUN!!!! and the model 98 looks semi similar to the A-5, so why wasnt this issue brought up years ago? I think everyone should write a letter addressed to Barbara Stewart at the new york times and also write a letter to Gretchen Dykstra at Consumer Affairs to tell her how misinformed she is, although if you do, dont curse and sound like a moron, as that would just further damage the image of paintball.
