how big of a deal is it to get a tank hydroed? im thinking of buying a 68ci 4500psi tank that needs to be hydroed soon, but it looks like its in great condition, but then again what do i know about eyeing a tank

How big of a deal is it? no field will fill an out of hydro date, if they do so, you and the field BOTH are punishable by a fine of up to 25,000. thats how serious it is. if the tank were to blow on you, and you had it shouldered, it WOULD probably kill you. you dont want that happening.
it only costs ~$20 to get a hydro so, please, get it done, and practially, you cant even get it filled if its not in hydro--anywhere

i think you missed the point of my question, i know why i need to get it hydroed, i was more interested on why tanks fail, and what to look for in this tank. i heard there was a visual inspection before the actual hydro, what are they looking for? if im going to buy a tank that will only be filled until june is silly unless i know it will pass. i also was curious on number of tanks that fail versus numbers that passOriginally posted by kevmaster

oh, ok, well technically, any of the following can fail a tank from visual inspection at the field and will require hydro testing before being filled again:
*dents (greater than .06" in depth)
*appearance of fire or welding damage
*bulges
*cuts .03" deep or 6" long
*corrosion: if over 25%
the process of hydro testing usually consists of removing the reg and filling the tank to 5/3 capacity while it is submerged under water. if the tank expands(causing hte wanter level to rise) more then a certian amount, the tank will failComment
