    How to avoid cold-weather issues...

Our tourney today was plagged by cold weather issues. The Evil paint broke in the barrel, even my LX emag chopped(which is the first time ever). What are some tips/gear good for cold weather?

Any ideas aside from the obvious? lol... Yeah, we had a huge problem with chopping today. My (Top Secret's) Cocker was down at least 3 minutes per game with me trying to clean out the barrel/breech etc. I know we could have stored our paint better, like in a cooler or something...

Trying (if possible) to keep your paint at a reasonable temperature is a good suggestion.

Also, think about dropping your velocity. Playing at a scenario lately, everyone was breaking paint. I knocked my velocity down to like 240 (280 was the limit) and enjoyed less breaks, a lot less. You do lose range too. Considering it was about 26 F and field paint, I was doing pretty darn good with 1 break out of 800 balls or so.

Use a larger bore barrel and lightly lube the inside with something like ACI oil. It should have a light shine to it, not so much that you can make designs with your fingertip. Doing this is usually good practice, no matter the temp. Hot, humid days it keeps the barrel more consistent too.

The 26 F day the boomsticks were a snug fit to the paintballs. Boomstick-equipped guns broke balls like mad. Stock Angel barrels too.

In cold weather, I have been known to wear a duster or big overcoat so that I can tuck my gun inside (the hopper, it is all about the hopper) and my reloaders are also under it. Harder to get at, but your body heat can help to keep the paint warm.

I thought it messed up your accuracy big time if you oiled your barrel...?

Perhaps a very small quantity of oil wouldn't be bad.

I dont know from experience, so I would suggest trying it before you use that method at a tourny.

Anyone tried polar-ice paintballs? they're supposed to be better for colder temps...

                          polar ice

i played rec today, foot of snow wind chill around 20, light snowfall. my micromag with old school a.i.r. valve and level 10 performed flawlessly shooting polar ice thru a freak 10 inch teardrop tip. the field has their own branded balls...but its just polar ice with a logo on it. a full case with no breaks in the chamber or barrel.

the main disadvantage of polar ice is the thick shell...added to your opponent wearing layers of clothing you will see many bounces. i have heard old timer BPers saying to run their barrels a tad larger than perfect barrel fit to give the ball a little more wiggle room to accomodate the frozen condensation in the barrel and give the ball less friction to avoid blow thru...but someone with a little more science in their background may be able to validate or debunk that theory.

Aside from Polar Ice, you might also want to try Torq. I think it's a Draxxus paint. We used it up here during a Quebec vs. Ontario rec game...it was pretty good stuff. No barrel breaks, fairly round balls, not too many bounces....etc.
