What would happen if you try to power your paintgun with nitrous oxide the stuff used in cars cuz I have a kit and i can easily hook it up to my mag does anyone see a downside to this?? also nitrous oxide is a nonflammable gas for those who dont know

It would be far more expencive then just using compressed air.

i dont know how clean that stuff is and it could blow lots of o-rings.

I know but just to screw around with since I have like 10 pounds of the stuff and its actually easier for me to get.

I thought Nitrous Oxide was hazardous to your health...? Personally I'd rather use compressed air... it's everywhere, and it's clean! Similar questions have been brought up before.

Do you have any clue what pressure it is stored at? I'd say it cant hurt, especially on a mag. I assume its well below 1000psi, but you may want to hook it up to a inline regular that's outputting like 600psi just to be sure.

You are right, it is. It's not toxic but you shouldn't breath to much of it or you will become intoxicated (just remember that any form of intoxication if for after paintball not during :)). The amount that you could breath when using it for a paintgun shouldn't be any problem.

As long as you have a bunch laying around and you can get it into the marker safley and at an approprate pressure I'd say "give it a try." As stated above you might run into problems with your o-rings if it's too cold/hot or dirty or something.

i have heard that nitro is a serious oxidizer, and will accelerate rusting on any steel parts??? if this is accurate wouldnt it be dangerous to run thru your valve? weakening the internal parts???

Nitrous Oxide is a strong oxidizer (because of the oxygen it has in it). That is why it is used in racing - it causes more complete oxidation (burning) of the fuel, releasing more energy in the reaction.

Pure nitrous oxide is laughing gas, used as an anesthetic in the dental industry. According to a friend of mine who's father is a dentist, it is a controlled substance. I've been told by this friend that the nitrous oxide used in auto racing is not pure, but has a sulphur derivative added to it that makes it toxic (and painful) to breathe, in order to prevent its use as an intoxicant.

I would be concerned about rust issues on the steel, as well as fire hazard in contact with lubricants in the paintgun, just as I would with the idea of pure O2.

As for helium, I believe that Tom Kaye has mentioned in the past that he had researched it, but found that its expansion charactaristics made it a poor (weak) propellent for paintball.

Using that logic, O2 would be a poor oxidizer, since the oxygen atoms have been "oxidized" by binding with other oxygen atoms.

One of the important criteria for an oxidizer is that it must contain oxygen, in order to be able to provide it for the reaction.

I understand that it must contain oxygen, however, MANY, MANY things that contain oxygen are not oxidizers. Water and carbon dioxide come to mind. Oxygen, as far as I know, is not considered oxidized (burnt). Are there any "oxides" that are oxidizers?
