    Why do you play tournaments?

I was thinking about this a while ago and thought I'd ask the masses.

Why do you play tournaments? Although the smaller local events are fine to discuss, I'm more intrested in the larger events like Mardi Gras Open, Skyball, IAO, ect.

Do you go to these kinds of tournaments because you believe that you can play better and beat 250+ other teams?

Or do you go to play knowing that you'll never be able to get 1st place but you want to see how well you do?

Or do you play just to have a good time?

Just some random thoughts but I'm intrested in your responses. Lets get some good discussion going here!

I would like to say that I am better than those 250+ plus teams but that's just not true, so I guess I would have to say to see how well I can do, what about yourselves?

Now, don't take this as a personal power trip or anything , but I believe that we play tournaments because we can beat the 250+ other teams out there and take 1st place.

I know we have the potential, and if we execute on the field, we'll be having a grand 'ole time in the winners tent.

However, I find it very disappointing when you don't place high in an event when you know you could've. Perhaps it was a bad reffing call or a gun went down or I tripped and got shot on the break (Not that that's ever happen before ).

I think that we're good enough to control our own desitny at an event no matter what the competition.

for the "Local" series meaning the famed Carolin Field Owners Association and the Atlatic Coast Tournament Series....We think we stand a good chance of finishing top 10 every event...something were proud of. Our team has some good sponsor backing

As for hte BIG events...Im going as captain of two rag tag teams to IAO and WC. Theres no chance ill win...but itll be fun to be with everyone and chill for a week

Never did. I am just curious to find out if you guys are planning to go pro ever. I for one would love to see an all Mags pro team.

I have been playing Tournaments since 1994 and this means the larger (IAO and NPPL mostly). Although in the recent years the teams I have played on have not stood a chance of winning I do it for the fun. Years back (pre 1998) I did it to win and have fun, cause in those day's I played with teams that I knew could win.

The one thing I can say is that no matter the event, small local field tourney or a larger event, I have never gotten mad that we did not win or place well. People have to remember, it's a damn game, until it starts to pay the bills and buys me a Vette, I'll never get upset that I lost. Because of this attitude I quit playing with organized teams and will only play on pickup teams that are doing it for the fun and sportsmanship.

because you actually have something to play fro. i mean when you go to a field you spend 90 bones all ready so for like 30 bucks more you could play a tourney and actually have a shot at winning some cool stuff

                      I second that.

Nothing quite compares to the 3,2,1 10 seconds...then the inevitable GO, GO, GO.

In my high school years, I played in bowl games, and they playoffs, and wrestled at the State tournament. Both give you a huge rush. All give you different feelings, and I think the paintball ones are the strongest.

i dont know how you can geta rush out of starting god knows how far away from the other team and then waiting an hour to see someone and fire off 4 or 5 shots and then waiting again. at least in tourney ball your closer and it goes faster. but to each is own

Thats a good point. I wonder if the "Size" of the event helps to dictate the intensity that some players play at. By "Size" I mean the number of teams in a tournament, size of the prize package, ect.

And with the higher the intensity, I imaging that there is going to be a greater chance for players blowing up. Maybe thats why we see so many pro players tossing their guns. There's a lot at stake at pro events, thus forcing the players to play at a high degree of intensity.

We've got a good discussion going here, lets keep it up.

I'll agree that the pro teams have more to lose when they lose. That's one reason I was never a big one for sponsors. If you have a sponsor, not only do you need to keep up the good sportsmanship (or at least you should), you also need to play well and win. No one would want to fork out large amounts of money to a team that never wins.

You have to compare paintball to other pro sports once you take it to that level. How many times have to seen pushing on the NFL football field? I won't even go into hockey, and baseball always has the yelling at the ump side of things. When you are at that level, you are expected to play a certain way, and not really act a certain way. The problem with paintball is that it is not as large and known as the aforementioned sports. So when people look at paintball and see poor sportsmanship, they see 6 - 20 guys on a field shooting "guns" at each other and then screaming and yelling. It makes the sport look like the game of barbarians. You also have to look back at sports like football. It was almost banned because of the amount of deaths. It's now the American past time (no longer baseball).

I have to disagree with this,
A lot of Amateur an Novice Team's have very good
sponsorship. I think it is because the Sponsor's
see the Sportsmanship that goes on at these level's
as compared to the Pro level and that is the type
                              of exposure these company's want.
How many Pro team's are actually out there, as compared
                              to the other level's.
I don't have the actual number's, But I can guaranty
they are a Minority as compared to all the Sponsored
team's in orginized tournament level Paintball.
