Its a joke, but it is offensive. On the other hand, I'd be surprised to meet a group who the Onion hasn't offended. Its funny, you just have to be less sensitive. My Latin teacher posts those articles on our bulletin board all the time. Some of my favorite past articles are:

Just to clarify, I wasn't offended by the piece, I just thought it was dumb. I was just pointing it to AO that pb was in The Onion. IN fact, I love the onion, and have never been offended by it. I read it every week. I like, obviously, the headline stuff, but especially Jim Anchower and Herbert Kornfeld's columns.If you can, get your hands on a real copy (more stuff in the print version). I should probably just spring for home delivery. Anyway, just clearing things up.

The Onion is one of a kind. I too find it hysterical that they know Draxxus and other stuff about paintball. Someone there is a paintballer, maybe he even owns a MAG!!!! :)

sigh - you know reading some these responces helps me understand why so many "boobs and explosion" movies continue to do well here - while the really well written and acted movies get ignored.

Its SATIRE - they arent even makeing fun of vets. If you read it its making fun of the idea that paintball players could possibly know the horrors of war. They aren't in the least making fun of vets - they are making fun of wanna be soilders.

The article as already said is Satirical as is the whole concept, and as everything is fair game, it only takes on a different slant when you can personnaly relate to it, but then humour like this is an "aquired" taste. Although american based it is available for the world to see and I doubt many people from outside the US would find Viz funny (Viz btw is a satirical UK based comic but written and drawn in a kids comic style, I have no idea if any the material is available online).

EDIT was more simple than I thought VIZ ONLINE be warned it is for adults not minors and will cause offence if you are "sensitive" to "dark humour"

There is a school of thought that says we make jokes about things that make us uncomfortable to talk about. Not everyone has the same level of "uncomfort". While I find some things funny that other people find offensive, I have trouble with subjects others find funny in jokes (I am "bothered" by jokes about domestic violence). It just depends on how "close to home" it is for you.

So, what am I getting at? If it is something that "only" makes you uncomfortable to talk about you will be more likely to find it funny. If it is a bigger deal than that to you, you probably won't.
