Well, the best buy would be a Mag. If you want to go cheap, you can get a basic Mag, or for more rec/local tourney kinna thing, you can go RT, or for tourney ball, you can go E-Mag.

Of course you get a biased answer, but what did you expect asking on the Automags owners site?
            "Want more range? Get closer.
Want more accuracy? Aim for once.
            Want more skill? Good luck."

For someone just getting into the sport, with a budget of 250 (im assuming this is TOTAL cash into the setup, not the amount for just the gun) I would suggest the either the Model 98 custom, or either a Spyder/ pirahanna in the same price range. From my experience (currently use tippmans as rentals, have used pirahannas as rentals, and seen the same for spyders as well as have sold lots of all three guns)
I honestly believe that any of the three are a reliable choice. I tend to think that the tippman is more durable than the others, but the spyder and pirahanna have a little more 'compact' feel and generally are more visually appealing (my opinion).

With all of these gun prices well under 200, that leaves cash for a decent set of goggles, as well as a co2 tank and hopper- - - bringing you up to that 250 point.

oh btw, emags and rts arent 250. pkus my friend is using co2 and doesnt intend to purchase nitro anytime soon. and for 20, just save 10 more and buy a samurai, i can find them REAL cheap

The bko is a nice buy for a good price about 250. And the avi package automag about 280 is a good deal also.

I agree, the BKO is a good buy- - but the main question that has to be answered is how much is he willing to spend on the whole gun setup? Lets say that you can get a BKO for 250. well, you have (realllly reallllly need to) put a low output nitro system on there- - so thats at least another 150. Not to mention a motorized hopper- -- another 50 or 60 bux. From my previous experience with bkos, i would reccomend either an evo 2 or a halo (they were supposed to be limited in ROF to 10 or 14 bps- - they are not.) add on top of all that some type of mounting system- - drops and airlines. that puts up the total cash spent on the gun to over 500.

My stock response for this question (What is the best gun someone can get to start out with?) is a Spyder Compact or Piranha VTL. Each cost somewhere in the $60-$80 range now. That leaves about $190 with which he can get a decent mask (let's say $50), X-chamber and bottomline setup ($40), decent barrel ($30-$40), pack and pods (let's say $40), a squeegee ($10 or less), and he'll still have a few bucks left over!

That's my complete beginner's setup for $250 =). Or he could forgo the pack or some other item and use that money to get an E-Frame varient of the Compact or VTL (or even a Black Dragun Compact).

IMO, this is the setup that works out to be the best buy for your money when you first start out.

EDIT: I forgot a tank, but 20oz co2's can be had for $20. He can choose where among the items to get that money from.

Gimme a used Spyder TL Plus any day. I can fix em and pick em up for like $75 bucks regularly. Heck new they are like $125. I like how they look compared to the Tippmans. They a little less sturdy but sturdy enough. And shoot fine and lots of them around and barrels and such.
