Berlin in a city in germany.
Berliner, is a donut type treat with it's own name knida like long johns, that's derives it's name from the city in which it was supposedly invented.
Berliner is a resident of Berlin.
In other words...it's up to interpretation. But it CAN mean "I'm a donut" no word of jelly
BlackHalo-that's spelled right... congrats YOu passed german class...

Ein Berliner hat immer etwas Marmelade, sonst ist es kein Berliner.
Translation: A Berliner is not a Berliner if it doesn't have jelly, it would then be called something else.
It's a tough phrase, technically and grammatically, it's correct, but it just so happens that being a "resident of Berlin" (which is what JFK was really trying to say) can be construed in a different context and subsequently associate you with a jelly pastry.
They do taste very good by the way.

The difference is that if your from a city you just say the city's name and add er (masc) or erin (fem). What makes the statment say that he's a donut is that he put the "ein" in front of it. Basically he should have said: "Ich bin Berliner" And that's the story according to my evil german prof.Originally posted by Heat
