AR-15's are not illegal, M-16's are. The AR-15 is only semi-automatic, it has no flash supressor, and no bayonet lug. The M-16, however, has a 3-shot burst capability, a flash supressor, and the bayonet lug making it illegal for civillians to own. If you have alot of money, you can get a Class III liscense and buy an M-16 for around $6,000. But, to do that, there is alot of red tape and paperwork.
