What exactly does the ACE look for?

While tuning my ACE on my SFL the other day, I started wondering exactly what a higher sensitivity setting checks for: the presence of light, or the lack thereof?

Anyone know? (by the way, I hope you don't respond with "it checks for a ball;" I know that.)

    Thanks

Reflection off the surface of the ball, if you look at the Ace, it is two seperate lenses, one transmit, one receive. (insert Homer Simpson voice) Beam goes out, beam comes back...

Yep as Evil Bob points out it's looking for it's own beam, not 'light' or 'dark' as such. It looks for a specific wavelenght.

Depending on the colour and shell material the surface is more or less reflective to the beam being sent out. That's why you need to tune it, so it knows at what level the reflection of the beam is strong enough to signal a ball being fed.
