    Why long barrel?

I remember reading somewhere that AGD found the best length was 11 inches for a barrel. So why do people always buy longer barrels (like 18", thats crazy!)?

some of it is psychological...you think you are getting more accuracy, so you perform better with a longer barrel even though the barrel isnt doing it...its just you performing better.

or the main reason is for sup air bunkers you can wrap your barrel around the bunker minimizing your profile.

well technically an 18" will get about 6 inches more distance than a 12" barrel

They say 11 inches is best for efficiancy, they don't say anything about accuracy. IMO 14 is as long as you should go. Anylonger and all it does is slow the ball down and make you use more air to push the ball. A 18 inch is just a waste of air and metal. Ive seen 20's too. It was on a stingray, he got it made at a machine shop of 100 bucks! It was a big waste of money.

It's all about the effective length of a barrel. Most of the 18" barrels that you see are step bored or two piece barrels, and the effective length is usually in the 5-7" range, making it an ideal lenght barrel. As for why a longer barrel; they come in handy on air fields where you can play really tight by pushing the bunker back with you barrel. Personally I only use a 14" scepter (w/ 6" effective length inserts) and it works fine for me but a couple guys on my team use 16-18" barrels and they seem to like them.

plus, a 14+" barrel is hella easy to sight down, makes it easier to snap shoot. I prefer 12-14", though i dont mind shorter, depending on the game im playing.

Your paint may fit the CP better than the Armson, and that may attribute to shooting better. From most of the tests I have seen, 2" really wont give you that much of an accuracy change...

As for length, I like the longer barrel for playing woods ball. It "seems" much easier to site those long shots through the woods with a 16" barrel.

I typically go for a shorter barrel playing speedball, as it is easier to maneuver around the tight bunkers.

A longer barrel will generally take more gas to run, so it is less efficient.

While on the subject of the Armson barrels, I was looking to pick one up myself.. I was thiking eBay..but they are like 50$ on there!? Are they really that expensive?

I was looking for a 14" Armon Stealth barrel. Would look very nice on my micromag. Anyone know what bore they are/come in and where I can get them other than eBay?

Tell me your experiences with them. I also have two 11" LAPCOs but would like a 14" barrel and the stealth looks nie (comes stock) on micromgas and I'm looking to get one.

                      Thanks.

Okay, things to set straight... Length of the barrel does not affect range. The ball is still travelling at 280fps when it leaves the barrel no matter what length. (okay maybe 6 inches more range ) Anyways, accuracy, its the barrel and how its made, not the length that determines accuracy. Efficiency, the longer the barrel the less efficient the gun is because the longer the barrel the more friction there is to over come to get the ball to 280fps. And lastly, noise, longer barrels are quieter than shorter ones because they absorb some of the vibrations and disipate the rest over a longer distance.

the only reason why people that arent idiots(people that think they will shoot further, etc) that use them is to push airball bunkers around my field has airball but no room to set it up so we have hyperball until they can move so im sticking to my 12 and 14s and when i got some money ill pick up a long boom stick or something for fun.

The longer the barrel the better the accuracy and its quieter and more efficant. With my 16 inch barrel I can hit mice in my back yard from the endof my drive way!!

Future is right on the money. The longer the barrel, the further back from the airball bunker you can stand, and it provides you more leverage to move the thing out of the way to snap shoot. This is important cuz for those who have never played on them, these things are really puffy, and there's no flat, hard surfaces to square yourself up to. That's why you see 16 and 18 inchers.
