    advise for backplayer (changed positions)

Hey guys, I play for the University of Maryland paintball team and I just moved from middy to eagle, and I need some advise for tourney back players (haven't practiced as a back yet). I know that I should pretty much be yelling all the time, and our team has a crapload of slang that they use that I still haven't memorized yet (been on the team for 3 months, so I'm still kinda new to them).
Other than the fact that communication is obviously key, I just need to know how far back I should stay off the break, etc.

Many of my teammates say I should lose my mag and get an eblade cocker (cause of range), but I love this gun way too much to get rid of it now (classic mag soon to be x-valved, blade intelli, 88/45 raptor rex w/ y2kradle/proconnect, 12" boomy, lvlX of course, pf h/l body, and ule trigger eventually ). It has served me well and is extremely reliable (always nervous using a cocker).
And besides, its hilarious having people talk smack at me for using a mech gun and then owning them ("wow, mags are much more powerful than I thought...") Can't wait for the xvalve...

There are some pretty knowledgeable people on the team but I haven't gotten much feedback on what I should be doing differently out there.
Any general strategy tips for eagles or stuff I should know before I practice?
Should I do anything else to my mag or get a new marker?

Any input from you really experienced tourney vets would be really appreciated, thanks alot!

I hope your teammates aren't physics majors..because it's impossible for a cocker to have longer range than your mag...but that's just another misconception I get sick of explaining to people because I don't have time to deal with ignorance..

As for advice for a back guy...shoot a lot...yell a lot...keep your head on a swivel..and just don't let your guys get mowed...that's about all I can think of...

well, I know that because velocity is gonna be the same out of the muzzle no matter what you are shooting that range isn't really something as a basis of comparison. But still, I thought that cockers shot farther for some reason...kinda like the reason that tippman flatlines get more range (backspin...?). I dunno, I am not experienced w/ cockers but thanks for the advice, I do know what you mean.

The only cocker that can be argued to have a better range is one with a flatline set up. To the best of my knowledge the cocker body itself doesn't put any special back spin on the ball.

as a back man you have to run the team. you have to tell your front men what to do. you have to make moves like tell every body to get there guns up mowing to get one of your front people to a postition. oh yeah learn all the types of bunkers. get a system where you can just yell out a call and they know where the bunker is.

on the break, you'll want to (along with your X many back men) find X+1 closest bunkesr (usually) to go to. each one of you should have a "lane" to shoot. find an bunker you cna shoot at off the break and pelt it. just light it up. between the three of you you should get ONE guy off the break, maybe two. once you're front guys are in their bunkers, you then need to provide thhem cover so one of them can make the "critical move". this is a predetermined move that should be their second move. most all fields have ONE bunker that if you get it, makes or breaks the game. you have to get it before they do. make sure he gets in safely...otherwise your'e screwed

You are the joystick driving the team around the field. Since they can't see much of the field in their little tic-tac sized front bunkers you are their eyes and tell them where they can go and where the bad guys are. Without you they are blind so don't do something stupid that gets you shot out. Play tight, shoot a lot of paint to cover your front/mid player's moves, but be careful about getting tunnel vision or gun fighting against another player. If your concentrating too hard on one thing the rest of the field is'nt being watched and front players get mugged, and don't buy you beers. It's not your job to post on someone and wait. If you find that you have'nt shot a ball in 10 seconds, your doing something wrong. Your gun has to be in the game all the time.

At at the end of the game when your players are moving down field and mopping upyou need to move up with them and keep them covered.

I just moved from being our 50-off-the-break guy to being our back/mid man, and got a lot of coaching on how to play it. First off, shoot someone off break by sweetspotting a lane, don't shoot at the person, throw paint straight down their lane and make them run into it. When you hit your primary, call out what you saw in terms of the other team's break. Call out all movement of the other team, and cross it up with your other back man. Back men SHOULD GET ELIMINATIONS, backs also must finish the game out, so you have to play smart and stay in the game. Gun down the front men moving on you from their primaries, and make sure to call attention to hot spots and key bunkers, and sweetspot key bunkers.

Thats all I can think of right now, I'm sure there's more.

i would say sweetspot off the break, make them run into it. throw asmuch paint as possible. stay tight. keep your eyes out for anykind of movement. get the know the field as much as possible before the game. keep your yelling short and to the point. got any tips for a middy?

For middy, essentially I conveyed alot of what our back was telling us to our front guys who were usually too busy being pelted overhead (while in some awkward, contorted position) to hear anything but what the other teams' backs were yelling. Also, you need to be on the lookout for opportunities to push and be aware of when the other team is pushing, and yell out what you see.
Give lots of cover to your front guys, lock bunkers that are giving them trouble and keep their heads down so the fronts can advance. ALWAYS be communicating, listen to what your eagle is telling you and make sure the front guys know what is going on. Other than that, play smart, don't make stupid moves, and try to get angles on the other team (try to avoid shooting up the tape, you wanna have a crossfire going with guys on the left shooting right and vice versa...so the left middy covers the right front and so forth).

Thanks for all the advice on playing back, guys. Should be helpful at OA this weekend so I can get into that whole "eyes and ears" grove, hehe.

Almost always know the count for both teams and correct anything that you hear that might have been said wrong. As for as where you should go....go to where you feel is comfortable enough that you can over look the whole feild or close to it and it is big enough to give you lots of room to roll out both sides. Yell a lot so every one can hear what you're saying and understandable. It will take some time getting use too....I'm still adapting to it aswell. But it's not so bad...you just shoot a lot....A LOT of paint. So be prepared for that .

VERY IMPORTANT!! Read all of this

First, back players should know the lanes, alot of people have talked about this, but one thing you MUST remember!!!!!

You MUST have 2 back players on your team for the best defensive line possible.

What you do is, before the game, walk the fields and look for shooting lanes. These are paths of direct sight all the way to the other end of the field, and you will shoot down these, hoping you will hit someone as they run to their first bunker.

Next, you MUST designate where you, and the other back player will move to, and it's best for you both to move to the back corners of your end of the field, and you MUST cross up your fire.

This means that if on the break, you move to the back left corner of the field, you MUST look to the opposite corner of the field, basically the back right corner. And the other guy should do the same, while looking in to the other corner. This creates an X over the center of the field. Theres a picture below to illustrate this. This is the best possible way to cover yourself and your players.

As you can see, there is an "X" This is the direction you and the other back player should look and shoot. And it's very important that you NEVER and I mean NEVER look down the tape line, if you do, you leave the other side open to an attack from which they cannot see!!! You must always look towards the INSIDE of the field, and never to the outside (the tapeline)

Just look at the picture, if one guy looks down the tape line, and the other team sees that you are not keeping your guard up, they can rush down the opposite tape line, taking everyoen else out on your team, and finally getting ot your back row, where, one bakc player has his back to the tape (like he should), while the other is looking down the tape.

This is a proven stragegy, my team beat Team Nasty last season using this technique.

Next, if a team you are playing is using this teqnique, you can counter it, and crush their team in one SINGLE play. ALl you have to do is create a distraction for one of the back players, and make him look down the tape line. At that second, you tell your front guys to rush the other tape, and have your mid players cover them like crazy. This will descimate the other team in a few seconds.
