That's an interesting point about the rechargeable alkalines, although I wonder how much use you will get out of them.
How come you haven't tried NiCd's? They're lighter than NiMH's, and I think they might even be lighter than alkalines. And they're going to be cheaper than NiMH's and Li-Ion's. I realize it's old technology, but it might actually suit this application.
The main reason I like the egg design isn't the weight, but the fact that the mass of the paint carrying is shifted back, so there's less hopper to be exposed on the front. This seems to be something that all the other hoppers seem to fail on.
