    Reffs...Helping newbs & 1 st timers

I reff at the local field, which on some days, there will be a lot of newbs and first timers. Sometimes i'll see a newb "cowering" or playin "far back", you know the ones, and tell em to move up. Not to belittle them but, to motivate them and hopefully get them to enjoy themselves more. For the most part i'll divide the team equally so the ratio of rentals to self equipped are relatively equal.

Some times i'll see a great angle, and i'll "inform" the newb to it, in hopes they will take advantage and capitalizes on it. I 've never blown anyones cover, FYI.

Lately, ive been feeling like i should just let them play their game and not give em tips or info them on a good spot. The point being they'll never get better if ya give em handouts.

So hould i inform the newbs? or let them play their game?

No you should not. Not as a "Ref". You should protect them and call the game and even design the game with rules that protect them. But you should not coach them. Thats what on field coaches are for. and I favore allowing them for new players. But even they do not give away positions.

As a Ref you have to limit yourself to reffing.

Exactly like cpphil said. When I ref I try to make things even, and hope that the others help the new players. And if they do not, just tell them AFTER the game, and let them know what they could have done. Hearing something after a game motivates them to try it next game, not depend on the ref.

IDK when I was reffin I would help them out just to try to make their experiance more enjoyable, in hopes that they would come back and play again and get into this great sport. By help them i mean\ hey maybe u should move up. OR warch your left. Not like there is a guy in that buinker right there if u peak around your bunker u can shoot him.

Yeah, by helping out thats what i mean. I dont purposefull give anyone their location. Ill try to make their experience as anjoyable as possible. In a perfect world, it would be nice if every first timer got at least one elimination every game. Not diggin the sport is one thhing, but havin em leave demoralized is another.

              don't help them if you're a ref

but if you're on their team as a player, have then pair up with the more experienced players so that they can have some good cover fire, as well as watch how you move and shoot

I always help the newbs at my field when they play, granted its a small field by reservation only, so when there is one noob, they all are. But all the refs help a little, so its not one sided. We dont tell were they are, or rip counts etc, only give them advice on moving and stuff. Its a good thing, yes.

One thing I hate, is when refs are one minded. I never really care how the teams are it could be me and a bunch of renters vs. all private guns, but I hate when refs do that. In rec I'm out there to have a good time not get lit up. If and when I become a ref, I'm going to make the teams as fair as possible.

refs, ref and keep everyone safe. when I play rec, I don't mind helping out some of the rental kids... If I see a good bunker for a kid, I'm going to tell him about it... I'm out there to have fun and let others have fun. It makes me happy to see a bunch of 12 year olds have the time of their lives playing paintball. Hopefully at least one of them will continue playing like I have. I wouldn't be playing now if other players hadn't have helped me out when I was shooting a carbine 68 .

Refs should give the newbs a little help from time to time. As an experienced player, I find it boring routing a group of newbs... Sometimes I feel a little guilty, too. I'm not saying ref should give away the opposing teams positions, but they should tell the newbs things that experienced players take for granted. For instance, it takes a little while to learn that you typically don't do anything except get shot if you hide behind the same back bunker all game. It takes a little while to learn that you can run from bunker A to bunker B w/out getting shot, but it's a lot harder to run from A to C w/out getting shot. Refs should remind the newbs what experienced players take for granted.

Besides, you don't get any better playing newbs if they stay newbs, so by helping them out, refs are also helping the experienced players out too.

I ref from time to time - though it is seldom offically handed me as a title. Today we had a group of new players come out of the woods and into the arenas... late in the day my team put down there markers and two of us acted as refs (we have no official refs on Sunday, small field, it keeps costs down).

My main goal became in that game to not let anyone get bunkered... I took one nasty hit to the back to, calling a player out before the bunkering and then sliding between that player and the one making the move (yes I call new players out when the bunker move is still two or three steps from completion). My beleif is that if someone is hurt in their first time that they will not want to do it again.

In this particular game(s) it was all new players though. I helped a bit (as did my other teammate playing on ref on the other end) with comments such as - rolling from the wall and shooting looks cool in movies - face the bunker. We also wiped off anything less than a solid hit (often even though there is enough splatter) - we all did this and allowed them to have more fun.

The goal with new players is to make them have fun - hand them over your mag, angel, whatever (we did) and cycle it around... let them get used to the game, have some interest in it, and come back. Encourage them to shoot lots of paint (I might be joking, you would think that). The field owner will appreciate your help in any that come back. Even if none come back, let them go away having had a great day - talking about how much fun they had rather than about how much that hurt.

I ref quite a but nowadays and I get a lot of newbs. I don't like to coach during a game, simply because I can't pay attention to every player all the time. But I can give advice before a game. I usually try to give everyone a basic layout of the field. I explain that with rental guns you can't stay that far back because you won't have a lot of distance or be able to break balls. I remind them to communicate with each other, watch the tape, press the flag and things like that. And after giving the general advice I keep my mouth shut unless someone asks questions. I make sure everyone knows enough to play, but if they want to go to the "next level" I make them ask me, I don't interject unless asked.
Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger
