First of all, a picture:
ULE, ULT, X-Valve and Y-Gripped RT Pro.
This was recently sent to me to be reviewed and evaluated by JJ Ontiveros. JJ and I have known each other for a bit over a year, I guess. Normally we give each other a hard time because he's a dyed-in-the-wool Automag RT guy, while I'm best known for using 'Cockers and Angels. Needless to say, I'm NOT an Automag person. Not a slam against AGD in the slightest, just a preference on my part. Anyways, after several encounters with JJ asking when I was going to get a real gun, responded to by "I guess when you send me one", I get a phone call one night a couple of weeks ago, and it's JJ, wanting to know if I'd be interested in reviewing one of AGD's products for the radio show and whatever magazine coverage I could get. I was taken a bit by surprise, to be honest. I guess since I'm not a 'mag person per se, I could give a fresh unbiased opinion on the current state of the art from AGD. Most would say that the Emag and XMag represent the true state of the art from AGD right now, but as I told JJO, the Emag in particular has been reviewed already by Mister 44, whom I respect as a writer. The ULE/ULT and Y Grip are the latest and Greatest from AGD currently, and nobody has done a review of one yet, and I guess JJO, Tom et. al decided to have someone without much experience with the type do a review...fresh eyes and perspective and all that.
My first impression of the gun was to note how tiny and light it is. Moving from SS to high strength Aluminum has paid some serious dividends! The fit and finish are what I would expect from AGD, which is quite high. The Y-Grip is interesting to look at, and reaction from people I showed it to this weekend were polarized...people either loved it or hated it. For me, it's comfortable, and I have a feeling that the fronts on my team will love the tightness that they can get with the frame being pushed out of the way. After I aired the little beast up, I noticed right away that the ULT trigger was much nicer than the old Level 7 Classic I owned very briefly a couple of years ago. As I learn the gun, how to adjust it and so on, I'm going to try and get the trigger pull softened just a skosh more so that I can walk the trigger. I may find out that this isn't possible, but it's tantalizingly close to that point now.
Right now I'm in the middle of debugging/breaking in a new to me Adrenaline Angel, plus I just recently finshed up a review of the Dragunfly LCD, and what with the holidays coming up, I won't get a chance to get out and play with this gun until Janurary. In the meantime, I'm going to adjust the LX out so it'll quit leaking (I read the LX thread earlier this morning, and it would appear to be acting like one of the LX installations where the valve 'broke in' and needs an adjustment), then I'll likely use the gun at an MXS game I'm going to in Jan. Watch this space and listen to FB Radio as the review and evaluation progresses! Maybe JJO will be successful in converting me!
