Were There Designs For The RT Airports?

Obviously somebody decided they needed to be there for a reason.
Were there visions of air-driven accessories being plugged into the ports?
Were there actual specific ideas or inventions, or were they put there to allow for general expansion in the future?
So far, they only serve as a place to install a gauge.

it was before the warp feed came out, so there was possibly an idea of an air-powered feeding system that was being talked alot about back when the 12v Revvy was the fastest loader available
