Basically.. every barrel is the same. The only factor that come in are:

Paint to barrel match (a kit fixes any problems with this, ie: Freak, CP kit, Scepter)

      From there its personal preference.

The best: a kit, specifically the JJ Edge Kit.

Freak, scepter, pipe, j&j, all good kits. I know, I'm not too fond of smart parts either. But I still like my freak.

Basically anything that's not too long and has a decent amt. of porting is good. From there, the kits are better.

Well, porting helps to reduce noise but I prefer my un-ported old brass barrel over any other kind. I dont know, it just seems more solid...

Remember SP was a barrel company first. I prefer the Freak. For anyone it's personal preference.

If you don't want to spend the extra money on a kit, there are still plenty of good choices of barrels... I prefer looking for deals on ebay, CP barrels, J&J's, Dye UL's, and I agree with Oyster... there is just something that feels right for me when shooting an old school brass barrel.
