As for the clamshell, it's a matter of convenience and not cost cutting. There's a lot of junk in the grip frame, and it's easier to access it with the clamshell design. In fact, it would be pretty much impossible to access it otherwise since the solenoid has to slide into the grip as well as the board. Bob does use extrusions instead of milling raw blocks of metal, which is definitely not a good thing, and he does overprice his guns, but they perform better than anything else out there so I can't complain too much.
I don't see where all the hate comes from...I suppose it's just because it's cool to dislike whatever's popular.
