In the paintball leixcon, they are used interchangeably, along with HPA. Now, you are generally filling with compressed air, although you may also use pure nitrogen, as it is an inert gas which is already at around 78% of our atmosphere (id est, there is a lot of nitrogen in compressed air anyway). I don't know why you would want to use pure nitrogen, but you could.

In any case, there is nothing to worry about as far as compatibility issues or anything like that. Actually, whilst at the local shop the other day, a kid came in to get a new butt-stock installed on his A-5. I overheard him explaining to his little brother how he couldn't use nitro, as his gun didn't have the appropriate parts, and as such he could only use compressed air. He then asked the clerk if he agreed, and in a half-stupor he just said "uh, yeah." It was mildly amusing, as the worker clearly wasn't paying attention to what the kid was saying. Oh well.

99% of places use compressed air, because of convience... they get a compressor + scuba tanks, compress the air and fill your tanks.

they're two different things that do the same thing

So what your saying is that I can't buy a nitro tank and fill it up with compressed air?

You may fill it with compressed air, to whatever PSI it is designed for.

You can fill it with compressed air, but it may not be used for nitrogen again until it is cleaned and tagged for nitrogen use again.

if you want the facts on some of paintball's HPA history, i'll give you it

back in the early 90's when good ole AGD first introduced the idea of a HPA (high pressure air) system, because he realised that it was a superior gas, the only inert gas available at that time at 3000 psi or above was nitrogen

now, we have better compressors and all thoes goodies which let us take breathable air up to 6000psi+

the nerm 'nitro' is probably the stupidest term i've ever heard brought into paintball, cause too many noobs take it as nitrous oxide

universal term for your tank that doesnt use co2: HPA - High Pressure Air

either way, in paintball, nitrogen and compressed air are 100% interchangable, but i highy doubt you'll ever see anyone filling a paintball tank with compressed nitrogen anymore
