Empty the tank and unscrew no?

That would give you an open port so the cylinder would be empty.

Do ya know what happens when you dont empty the tank completely? As the plane goes up, the pressure increases dramtically inside the tank. Imagine carbon fiber pieces being propelled by 5000 psi. That'll tear most anything apart.

        I'm driving it

I had the airfare all ready to go and everything. I called up ATA(airline) and La Guardia(airport) to see what had to be donw. They were both very leary(?) of having either air tanks or paintguns on the planes in any fashion.

I was leary of putting my stuff on the plane for fer of never seeing them again. So my brother and I will be renting a convertible and driving it. It's a 13 hours drive from NY to Chi but we broke it into two 6 hours segments.

We'll leave Thursday at around noon, drive about 6 or 7 hours into Beechwood, Ohio and stay at the Beachwood Super 8 then Friday morning continue into Chicago. Kick around Chicago for a day and drive out to Joliet early Sat am. Back to Chi hotel Sat pm and head out back to the Super 8 Sunday afternoon. We should be home by noon on Monday.

I think it would be more fun for my brother and I to drive it anyway. And it's way cheaper too. The cost of the car and the Super 8 and the hotel in Chi is about 1/4 less than my original plan of flying into Chi and staying in the hotel 3 nights.

THEY WILL NOT LET YOU TAKE YOUR AIR BOTTLE ON BOARD EITHER IN CARRY ON OR PACKED IN YOUR LUGGAGE

at least southwest wont, i know this FOR A FACT, they did not let me take mine on a recent flight, i had to leave it at the airport for the duration of the trip and get it back when i came home

they dont care if its empty, right now you are not allowed to take anything that can contain pressure on the airplane

just a warning, they didnt let me, and they may not let you, just keep an eye out

i talked to them on the phone BEFORE i went and they said it would be no problem, BUT when i got there they wouldnt let me take it aboard, i was pissed....

anyways just be aware, what they say on the phone and what they say when u get there may be different,

if i were you i would just send it fed ex or something like that to someone you know, maybe someone driving to shatnerball, something like that

markers they have no problems with, i left mine all together and they had no problem, as long as its in your baggage that your not taking aboard, its no problem

Yes, its all due to IATA (International Air Transportation Association) regulations adopted a few years ago which replaced DOT Air transportation regulations. DOT now defers all air to them. They are not a Regulatory branch but they carry the weight of law through DOT defereing to them. The US has adopted all of them and they have all phased in.

The Airlines are all leary of compressed gas cylinders after the Value Jet crash where the supposedly empty Oxygen Generators caused an inflight fire resulting in the plane going down in the Everglades. Lots of deaths. Sparked a whole review and revamp of air transport of cylinders. And eventually the adoption of IATA

Ship it out to yourself is maybe the surest way. It can be air shipped if completely empty. Can hold 30 psi if ground only. Verifying empty is the problem. MOst want to see there is a hole in it so taking out the Burst dissk is one good idea mentioned. But the Airline itself can and do refuse things even when they meet the IATA regs. It's up to them I am afraid. Wish I could give you a straight answer. In the future I am certain it will all sort out but as they are new to this they tend to overinterpret.

Forget about taking it apart and all that...here is what you do:

Make sure your tank is empty....

Package the whole thing up nicely....

And MAIL it to Chicago, just like if you were selling it all to someone there.

See if AGD will let you send it to them, and then pick it up when you get to Chi-Town.

                  There...done....easy enough!

I agree with beam. Just UPS it. UPS also allows for a large insurance amount (up to $50,000.00) if you declare it as such - the more the insurance, the higher the cost to ship it though. Your hotel could sign for it and it could actually be there waiting when you arrive. With my job I ship high dollar items all over the place and seldom do they ever lose anything. When you're done, ship it back to yourself. Airlines are whack and their personel are overworked, underpaid and basically uncaring for your situation.
