If bowling is popular why can't paintball?

I saw this article at work and it got me to thinking that the same analysis could be applied to paintball.

In summary 3 guys buy the PBA and are trying to resurrect it. (Ok, they aren't your typical 3 guys)
Some of the deficiencies are the same that face paintball.

In Tyger's thread Shives makes a similar point.
Paintball Talk is the main forum for Automags.org. Here is where we talk about the sport of paintball in general and make announcements relating to the forum and website.

Everybody thinks they can just port paintball as it is to TV. Ad money comes in and all is well.
We all know paintball in it's current form is boring to watch and we currently don't have the technology to do high speed HDTV so we can see the paint flying towards the target in slo-mo (One of the biggest problems for TV). If you are watching from the fields it's fine because you can see the near misses and appreciate it. Golf would be really boring if you could see the ball take off and just land somewhere.

The anticipation and uncertanty of seeing that bowling ball is what TV captures you attention just like seeing that golf ball glide towards the hole.

Even the Olympic Archery and target shooting seemed to be more interesting if you package it right.

Does paintball still have spokespeople that are eloquent and knowledgeable enough to be commentators? You'd really need 2 people, a player that can see what's about to happen or tell you the possible moves and a 'normal' person that is interesting but will be the non-player proxy just like the World Series of Poker. You still get the introduction by just tuning in but as you keep watching it's also informative and you can still learn what not to do.

A couple of good reasons. You can be a lazy slob and still be good at bowling. Also, bowling tends to be less painfull, and is conducted in a cool, clean environment. This past weekend, i was belly crawling through dirt at the snake, with angry hornets coming out of the hyperball tubing next to me, and paintballs rattling the whole snake. Fun, yes, but bowling its not.

Bowling has been around for a long time and is part of the your mom & pop's history. Growing up going to the alley on a date blah blah. Bowling in away is as american as taking the family to the ballpark.

Most of the people who are always going "why isn't paintball on tv like other sports or like olympic sports" you guys are usually younger.

What's fun for you may not be fun for the masses and it's the masses that spend the real money.

Also other sports are straight forward. There is one way to play and people do it the same. We have different types of paintball with different rules. They can't even enforce or agree to what boards are legal or not.

              First off,
If you think bowling has no class, or isn't challenging, plain and simple, your wrong. But thats getting off topic.

Bowling has gotten a lot more publicity lately (past few years), because of what he 3 entrepenuers (sp) have done with the PBA. They've put a lot of money into advertising, obtaining sponsors, and being good to ESPN, their cable distributor. The PBA telecasts are shown every sunday at 12:30 or 1:00. By the middle/end of the telecast, the timeslot is also the timeslot the NFL uses for pregame/early games. Believe it or not, the PBA has actually matched and/or bettered the amount of viewers that the NFL has. Why? Advertising. Public interaction. Their deals with Baby Ruth, some microwave dinner company, cambridge credit corporation... they're getting the audience and spectators something to keep them coming back...

In Pball... as of right now, does any company offer something like, buy a case of our paint, receieve free entry to any field etc...

If Paintball is to get on TV, there has so to be some incentive for non-playing spectators to watch and get them to keep coming back and watching again next week.

Dick Clark is taking the right steps toward putting PB on TV... but what are the odds that the random couch potato will watch it one week, and if unentertaining, watch it again the next?

Thats a pretty ridiculous question... the sports are 100% nothing alike. You really cant compare the sports or the viewing audience.
