I am sure I don't know the real reason, but I have two assumnptions.
1- The stock barrel on the Mini-Mag was only 8 inches long and recessed much more deepley in the body than on the Stock Mag.
2- The vertical bottle adapter was originally a good way to both keep the CO2 bottle vertical (thereby keeping liquid out), and it also made the gun more compact.

When the minimag was brought out, it had a really short barrel and instead of the back bottle set up it came with a vrtical bottle. This made the overall length a lot shorter. With bottles on, it was around 50% shorter. The main body is longer, but overall it wasnt. Once you chance your barrel, and put a bottom line on it, all of that changes, leaving a longer body. But with stock parts, it is "mini".
      Hope this helps.

                  too young to remember...

Maybe you are too young to remember, (or possibly I am growing senile in my old age), but the original PTP MicroMags had a one piece barrel/body and were a little smaller. The current PTP models are probably a little smaller too, as it doesn't take as much room to hold the cocker threads as it does for the MAG twist lock barrels in the body. I do agree with the comment that they were quite "fugly"...

Hate to be the one to inform ya RaV3n, but a micro is smaller than a mini, body is smaller, it is milled nicley thou, and i agree that its fugly too, but it carries an AGD valve, some of them here look kinda cool but I personally wouldnt own one, I'll take my Mini anyday of the week. Also Paintchucker was right, origionally the micromag had a fixed barrel but now uses auto crapper threads, oops sorry, auto cocker, never did like that marker but i guess its just personal preference, they too have been around as long as AGD, great markers as long as ya dont mess with em too much. But again RaV3n, you are wrong, not a flame, just the facts, if ya dont believe me go to www.proteamproducts.com and see for yourself
