The old A3 was a great Tank. Good enough, that the same main gun and mount were integrated into the M1 through M1-IP series.
The only thing wrong with those old M60's was that stupid commanders cuppola, and the fact that it is soooo bloody tall!
When the Israeli's picked up the A3, they took the cuppola off and installed a M2 BMG remote mount instead, and when they developed their Merkava Tank, they also used the main gun and mount in that.
Jordan is right now gutting and rebuilding M60's (many they bought from where I work). They are installing a 120mm Swedish gun and platform, slaved to a very advanced fire control computer. Reports that I have read, say this gun system is fantastic.
When we used to pull the turrets off for repairs, we would go joyriding in just the hull. If we took out the fuel governor, we could get those things up to 60mph, wheeeeee!
