Brush plating a material that doesnt need a base plate is super easy, it gets hard when bases are needed, & when aluminum is involved. The piece should always be polished to the desired end finish (matte-mirror) before plating begins.
Aluminum is then treated with a zinc solution to remove the oxides present in the surface of the metal. Then it must be immersion plated (usu w/ copper)to avoid possible contamination. Then the final surface finish must again be achieved w/ the copper very carefully. Trust me, it's easy to burn through, even hand polishing. Then the final plate. I don't recommend the use of ANY abrasives on the finished piece, a high shine, or whatever, should have already been achieved, & that will carry over to the final plate. With gold, it's even easier to burn through
