How does a Classic Mag work..

Well guys I was working on my valve today and I thought to myself.... How does my Classic mag work....? Well I figured this is the best place to go to find out but I didn't see any formal posts about just it . So is there like a historical post about it? or is there a chart on it or will this need to be explained in a lengthy paragraph or 10...?
    Thanx for your help...
