    Removing anno with Lye

I have used Lye many times to remove anno. I have noticed that when it soaks almost immediately it removes the glossy finish.

I was wondering if by dropping a gloss black item into the lye solution, taking off the gloss and then immediately dropping it in vinegar to neutralize the lye would produce the effect of a dust finish?

I wonder if the remaining anno would stay on the piece and have an even appearance?

I wonder if the piece would oxidize like the bare aluminum does before you seal it again?

    Anyone?

I say you try it and report back with pics pronto.

That sounds like a pretty cool idea.

The way it will look after ano has to do with how the metal is prepared. You get gloss when the metal is polished... and other stuff when its not. Dust is usually made by blasting the metal first, either with beads or sand. If you do what you describe above it will probably just look like junk when its done.

get a piece of crap parts and try it, and if it doesn't work right, give it a full bath, then polish it to mirror finish, unlees you want to throw it away.
Hard work never killed anybody...but why take a chance?
