    freak vs. pipe (barrel kits)

i am going to get a micromag and will need a new barrel. I lke to shoot accuate and have looked on ebay and pb review and decided that i should either get a reak kit or an evil pipe, i have had neither so i have to rely on the reviews. they each placed a 9.5/10 and the freak had weak inserts and dropped velocity and was pricy and the pipe was loud and had a poor selection of colors.

so my question is which one?

i play speedball and ave a z grip and like accurate, right now i have a 16 inch boomy.

so my other option is to save money (i need some for my car...) and get a 16 inch boomstick.

    tell me your thoughts....

i have a pipe kit on my imp and i love it. when i had my mag before i traded it i had a freak on it. i would say they almost have the same in performance. the pipe is not loud at all. i like the pipe kit better b/c it dont use inserts. its all about what you think looks better and fits your sitiation better

i say pipe. it is definately higher quality, and unlike the freak, the .695 from your kit will actually be the exact same size as the .695 from your friends kit. with the freak, the .689 from ur kit might be equaivalent to the .691 from your friends kit, etc. also, the pipe has angled porting, therefore better clearing. if loudness is an issue, just buy a stiffi tip. they are available for both the freak and the pipe.

in short: pipe. angled porting, better quality control, better deal.

The stainless inserts are pretty precise and the aluminum ones arent that great. They're worked the kinks out of the inserts by now.

I prefer the freak. Its quieter, better looking, and when the inner finish wears out all you need is a new insert, not a new barrel back.

But thats just my opinion. They're both good barrels.

            They wear out??

Well I've been shooting the same backs on my Pipe for 2 years and there as good as new still

Also since it's only 2 peices when you do get a break it not only cleans out better by it's self, but after words when you go to totally clean it you eitgher don't have to take the back off at all, or just take the 2 peice apart and cl;ean it apart...with the freak thats 3 peices cause the paint finds it s way out of the insert and into the back were it can sit and get in the way latter.

I had a freak a while back and just did not care for it. Plus the orings seam to wear out fast and that causes the inserts to not sit properly in the back, causing a heck of alot of accuracy and breakage problems.

I prefer the pipe, between the two. I just have seen some finicky freak kits (my own included.)

My favorite barrel kit is still the Powerlyte Scepter, however.

I've owned both and I like both a lot.

I love the Pipe's packaging and the fact that it has solid backs- less to lose.
but, i never noticed it being any louder or that the angle ports made a bit of difference in clearing paint vs. regular ports.

But, i think the pipe is pretty pricey, plus, i think the average player really only needs 2 or three bores, most paint is pretty consistent these days. so i think 5 bores is overkill. sure it's nice to have the options iguess.

The freak looks cool and the new stainless inserts are an improvement I think. I like all the color/tip choices and the fact that for $18 i can pick up a new bore if needed. Plus, if you get anew gun all you need is a $45 new threaded back rather than having to buy a whole new Pipe kit.

As far a performance, I have to say that they both work very well. But i need to caution that i am not a believer in barrels- i think that as long as the paint fits it OK and the bore is reasonably smooth then the paint will fly straight and far. If i stop trying to justify my purchase of a new barrel and compare it's performance to a Tippy stock barrel or a one piece CP, or my old Armson rifled- really, they all shot the same. I know, that's blasphemy, but it's true most of the time. the real problem with accuracy is in the paint.

Don't get me wrong, i still spend money on new parts for fun.

Other than my urge to try out different stuff, my ideal "kit" would be made up of 3 Ultralite Backs and 12" and 14" Ultralite Tips.

                  Done with rant.
                  sigs are overrated.

I have the pipe kit and am very satisfied with it.

                    Never used the freak.

I heard the pipe tips crack down the vent holes if you use a battle swab. Might want to do some more research into that and see if its true or not. I believe photos where posted on PBN about this.

i have been using the freak system, with 3 inserts, and two fronts ( 10" freak & 14" all amsrican) and it works great. easy to use and with only 3 insertts i can fit most paint marb shoots perfect through it. I like how the fronts come in different lengths and colors so you cn match it to whatever. I havent used the pipe barrel but i just got an Impy and may gice those a try.

I have used a Freak for about 3 years now. I have a back for every marker that I use more convenient than a complete pipe kit for each gun. My vote will go to the freak any day of the week.

Spartan X I believe he is talking about the outer finish on the insert wearing off . ( mine all look like new after 3 years use)

i had a freak and they are nice and quite barrels

i loved mine but only in the summer and dry days

when its humid or wet out or cold then you get a crap load of barrel breaks

i bought a wgp kaner kit and i love it

shoots nicely and never had a barrel break yet
