Which bore size...

how do you determine which bore size u use for your barrel kit... i have one that has .684, .686, and .688 sizes. any help would be appreciated

Ok, here's what ya do. Take the paint you are using and place it in one of your inserts/backs. If it rolls right out the insert/back is too large. If it fits snug, try blowing the ball out. If you turn purple, it's too small. If it blows out with some effort, it's perfect. You will most likely be using the .688 size the most.

Unless you live in Minnesota, I still haven't used anything larger than the damn .683 in my Pipe kit. Cold weather shrinks balls, film at 11.

make sure you use more than one ball to test too.

I use the smallest one that lets the paint roll through every time. If I have any reason to suspect the quality of the paint I just use the .696

On my cocker I sue the larest one that prevents rollouts.

I get it, I know. I guess I wasn't clear. Why do you use a different "standard" for your cocker?

my .691 shoots just as good as my .688, on my viking.

Because with a closed bolt gun, there is no detent to hold the ball in the breach once the bolt is forward. You have to use a barrel that wont let the paint roll out of it so you can't get away with the "using a huge bore to avoid barrel breaks" thing.
