Question about Stock and Pump class.....

I am pretty uninformed about these classes of paintball. I see a great deal of people here on the forums discussing it but have never really taken intrest in it. As far as I know there is no such league or active organized play of those events in this area, but as I said I haven't really looked.

Is this a tournament circuit or just a sideline at local fields?

What consitiutes a stock class marker? I have seen a few things discussing using co2 powerlets and restrictions on mods, hoppers, etc.....what is allowed and what is not? Is there a "stock" class that allows the use of constant air and a 200 rd hopper?

One of the local fields runs regular mech only games and tournies so that the younger or people with less paint $ can have a "level" playing ground. I love to play in them, even though my RT has been disallowed. All RT's actually....
I commonly play against the experianced E group with my mech and would love to check out the slower more skillful set.

Stock Class is a specific configuration that has the feed tube parallel to the breech requiring a tilting to load a paintball ( rock and cock). The stock class paintball gun is power by a single 12 gram CO2 powerlet that is held in place by a knob or housing that has to be completely removed to change the 12 gram powerlet.

-Taken from the CCI (phantom) website

I play stock, I just don't ALWAYS use 12g's. Most guys will have at least one 3.5 or 4oz co2 tank that they use. I'd suggest you get a used phantom (or new if you feel... they have GREAT resale value and you can almost sell it and break even). As long as you have a 10rd or 15rd feed tube on top you'll be good to go. I'd suggest the .45 VSC (vertical stock class) configuration, as it's the best for consistency and the best way to use bulk (not 12g) co2.

I've never run into anyone else in my 1.5 years with my phantom that played stock as well. A couple may occasionally play pump, but not many there either. The BEST place to be for pump/stock is california. They have regular leagues

I dont know of any leagues in my area either, but Im sure there is one. A stock class tube can hold no more than 20 paintballs. 10 and 15 is the most common. I made my own stock stick feeder from 1/2" copper tubing and a homemade ball gate. I chose copper because I already had some in my garage. You can use CPVC too. It will prolly be lighter and not get as hot during hot days.

I also have a 12g changer and a mini 9 oz tank. I just became more interested in it as well, and I bought a used tippmann sl 68II for about 50 bucks. Im gonna take a dremmel to it when it gets here and carve it a little bit, and then repaint it and clearcoat it. If you are interested but dont know if you want to spend a lot on a phantom, I recommend contacting a local field and ask about old rentals. They may sell you one really cheap. One local field here offered me a traccer for 25-30 bucks.

I think that using a pump is going to save me a lot of money as far as paint, and air costs. 1 dollar for a fill, and maybe 250-400 balls instead of a case or more. You will also be forced to work on other skills like snap shooting, bunkering, posting up on ppl, and making your shots count. Thats the main reason I got into it.

stock is pretty much what it implies: no gadgets.

12 grams only, twist changers for 12 grams...must not be able to remove changer in less than two turns (iirc) no lever or pump changers either. no check valves that hold a shot while changing 12 grams.

horizontal feeds only. no hoppers or sticks etc. strictly "rock and cock".

no autotriggers. though phantoms have a/t's, you may not use them in a strictly stock class environment.

          other than that...anything goes......

EDIT: p.s.-why is your RT disallowed?

Here is a Stock Class phantom. Notice the 12g changer on the vert air, and the 10 round tube parrallel to the barrell. Those are the 2 big keys to SC play.

This is an old BE Cobra. Notice the gravity fed hopper and the Rear ASA. You can put a CA bottle on it or a 12g changer. But it is still not SC because of the gravity feed.

Or you have the PGP.. A true SC marker.

What is exactly the autotrigger anyway?

If you hold the trigger and pump, the pump action will fire the gun.

the definition of "stock class" has loosened up a lot... the SCP guys are cool, but rather hard headed about that subject...

I use a 15 round horizontal feed on my phantom, but use a small HPA bottle on it since 12grams annoy me (I do have a 12gram changer for those pure-stock days though!)

As far as "classes" of paintball goes... Stock and Pump are catching on mostly because they're fun, encourage sportsmanship and fair play, and generally don't have twibs.

We don't need refs either... last several events I've been to had maybe 1 field ref to make sure everyone was in bounds on a badly marked field...

and its really fun to mow muppets with our agg upped gats... that only shoot 6bps tops...

Don't worry about having an autotrigger, from what I've heard if you ever happen to play in a SC league, they won't mind anyways. Phantoms are probably the most widely known and used stock class guns, but technically have an illegal autotrigger and 12g changer (very few turns required to change). I haven't heard of a phantom being banned from any SC tournaments.

I think everyone should play stock class at least once. It's fun, saves a TON of money, stresses movement/skill/teamwork, and you shouldn't have any trouble maintaining the guns.

As far as SCP goes. I have not noticed the people there being that hard core on SC play. I personally like to play with gravity feed and a bottom lined 9 oz tank. As long as its pump its all cool. For SC tourneys they are more hard core on things. And really an auto trigger on a SC feed gun is useless.

In a nut shell, pumpers want other pumpers to play. What ever configuration that may be is usually irrelevant as long as it requires a pump stroke to fire.If you ever find and then play in, a pump only League or Pump only tourny (rare find), those will be the only rules you need to be concerned about. Worry about it then.

Pump play nowadays is all about what you expect to get 'personally' out of a day of play.

What that means to me is this, I try and only play true stock class because if your going to use bulk hoppers and CA, what's really the point? Same with autotriggers, might as well just use a semi instead of deceiving yourself by saying you play pump and then Autotrigger your Revy fed pump all game and never have to reload a tube or change your air source. Completely misses the point if you ask me but I say, whatever floats your boat...go with it. At least your in the ballpark of true pump play.

                          Anyway...

                          That's my feeling.

Oh....and as for Phantoms or any other Nelson based pump for that matter, they have generally been considered exempt from autotrigger rules since way back in the day due to the fact that it's a part of their design that can't really be changed. Not autotriggering during play is just a honor system thing...much like most of pump play so don't give that a second thought either. :)
