    Impressions on my new proto

So, I was standing around in the paintball store today and looking at the Protos that had just come in. I picked one off the wall, and put my Ion in its place. The owner thought it was pretty funny so I put the barrel on it and switched over my air tank. One less Ion, one new Proto... and i got a super deal on it that I simply was told not to disclose. And he gave me more for the Ion in trade than I paid for it when they first came out

    My impressions:

    Pros
The red to black fade is very nice
The parts kit they send with it is very nice, as are the allen wrenches in there own holder.
The stock barrel is very nice
    VERY quiet.. insanely so
VERY fast in legal modes - I thought at first it had ramping. Obviously I liked the trigger
    Very light, and feels durable.
Out of the box +/- 2 over the chrono
Fits nice with the inline Max-flo and the rail for it.

    Cons
The feedneck is too tall, it will need to be replaced
Efficiency.. oh my god efficiency sucks on these. One hopper and three pods was dropping me 2500 PSI out of a 68/45. So, what do I do about that?

ah ha! Didnt you order a devilmag frame too?

Back on topic, I just bought one of these too. I busted my eye ribbon though so I've been shooting blind for two full days of paintball now (no chops, sweet). As for your effeciency, it needs to be broken in. Mine shot a bit rough the first day but once i put a few tanks through it, its gotten better. If it still doesnt get better, check out the proto forum on PBN and look for the ghetto tape mod/tophat mod. It drops the kick and raises the effeciency.

Enjoy your proto, I know I am

I kept my Ion for like... three months? However long since they first came out. It was the longest I kept a gun in a long long time. I tend to bounce around on them. And yes, I am still waiting for the Devil... Mine doesn't kick much at all.. I surely did not notice any kick. I was just surprised at how quick it used air.

Mine kicks right now because I'm still breaking in the lpr. See, mine was only shooting about 30 feet at 5 turns out and set to 275 fps. I put a bunch of air through it and then it shot a normal distance 5 1/4 turns out. Now today, it is shooting a normal distance at 4 1/2 turns out. It kicks at 5 turns out but not once I get under that. Some people can run it at 2-3 turns out, but I havnt gotten there yet.

As for the devilmag question, I was just wondering if you've gotten totally sick of waiting too

Im accepting of the progress on my Devilmag.. its a custom item with the timeframe to match. Its not that big of a deal to me waiting. Chris has been most helpful to me and answered all of my questions. Though I really don't want to continue the discussion in this thread

Stupid question.. at 275 FPS it was not shootign far. How is that possible? Im curious as the the explanation, because my hope is to not touch anything and hope it just works

Eye ribbons suck, wiring harness sucks (because they don't know how to make one), feed neck sucks. Otherwise I love mine, used a piece of tape to tape the eye ribbon to the solenoid so i don't squish it. Replaced the feedneck ect.

Make sure you got the eye cover allen wrench with it, and the orange LED looks more reddish. Otherwise you may have gotten one with a short bolt, which will chop (like angels, same thing). It's also a good idea to clean out the verticle reg as soon as you get it, both mine and my brothers needed it badly. Also check out the switch, you may have gotten an 80 gram one if it's newer, you can find the 25 gram ones for like a $1.10 on mouser or digikey.

Ohh and be careful with the battery harnes, Dye charges like 30 bucks for them, but if you savy with a soldering iron and crimping you can make em for 5 bucks.

The efficiency is probably the regs being new, it gives you a reason to dry fire aroundt he house . Watch out for the wiring, I have heard bad things.

that was exactly what I was wondering. I thought all guns were capable of the same distance at the same velocity, but believe it or not, it wasnt the case. I had to arc shots like crazy all day, and it didnt fix itself until I turned up the lpr. It has something to do with the pressure, but i'm just at a loss for an explanation. This is just based on what I saw all day

I have been shooting one since january. Efficiency will get better. I have re-lubed my LPR once with DOW 33 about two months ago and have never relubed my Hyper II. I clean and re-lube my bolt every week and I run my LPR at 4 turns out and the gun shoots... period.

I know I can get less kick by trying lower or mixing several lubes to create a super mixture that will allow me to go as low as 2 but that's just not me. I like to pick up the gun and play. The DM's around here that run on lower LPR setting do have less kick but it takes more time to mantain them.

I actually like the feedneck considering that is is a stock non-clamping one. It fits my un-sanded Halo nicely and would actually look better if I were to cut my Halo neck in half because the feed neck on the gun is a "low-rise" in the sense that is is designed to take chopped Halo necks. I just left my halo the way it was.

I heard something about wrapping the bolt with electrical tape to give it a better seal. Sounds crazy to me, but I hear it works.

first off, you are having efficiency issues, that isnt how it should be. i can get 5 and a halo off my dm5 with air to spare. and the proto is inherently more efficient as well.

Hotshot, the tape isnt for the seal, the tape makes the size of the dump chamber less, there fore, raises the pressure. you have to do it right though, and it really isnt necessary.

does any one truely shoot more than 5 pods a game any more?
