The company that made the 44 automag(TDE I think) went out of buisness. They had a hard controlling the recoil pressure on the slide. Was a problem with the availability of stainless and machining processes in the late 70's.
But that company is out o business and doubtfull that any intellectual property was retained(maybe).
Though it would not be copywrite( can't copywrite a word) it would be trademark and trademarks only apply to categories. Paintball is generally not in the same as firearms and neither are attributable to a band.

Actually,
The .44 Automag was originally created in the late 60's by the Pasadena Corporation. After the Pasadena days, several companies had their own version of the firearm, including: TDE North Hollywood, TDE El Monte, High Standard, TDE / OMC, and AMT. "http://www.the-dirtiest.com/automag.htm"
And a side note!Originally posted by Lohman446AMT made the firearm "Automag" if I recall
Contrary to popular belief, the automag used in Sudden Impact was neither a Pasadena model, nor an AMT. It was actually one of two guns that were hand-crafted especially for use in the film. Only one of the two actually fired, and was used for all of the shooting scenes.
It shot .44 magnumish cartridges out of an autoloading pistol sounds like an automag to me.Originally posted by Warbeak2099Who the crap cares, it's a stupid name for a band anyways.

Enter the IMI Desert Eagle, the "new" Automag chambered in Magnum revolver offerings as well as .50 AE and some other pidley calibers...
Anywho, I've seen the old Automags kicking around from time to time at gun shows and even on the range once
Can't say I'm horribly impressed with the old autopistols but they are kinda neat.
there's no purpose to this reply, but, eh, I'll post it anyway
