    Freak System Question

So I was shopping for barrel systems, since they do seem to be one of the best innovations in paintball in the last few years....

I like the Freak System by SP and had a question. Their online store offers an Automag and a V-Mag threaded back. What's the difference?

I am getting a classic RT so the twist-lock thread is needed right away, would that be the Automag back? And just to make sure of the obvious, once I have the set, all I need to move from one gun to another is the appropriate back right? (So when I get my custom RT pro all I need is a cocker back.)

Thanks! I would have asked SP about this, but you folks are cooler.

Automag is std AM/MM threading(twistlock) Vmag is for the vertical feed mags

You are correct about the backs and changing from gun to gun.

If I may make a suggestion, go with a solid back design, or at least stay away from the freak kit, the inserts are too thin and they will get damaged and distort easily. If you have your heart set on an insert system go for the scepter, best I've tried IMO And if you want a solid back sys, go with the J&J Edge kit, they can be made in any threading, and bore sizes you choose.

If you are planning on getting another mag in the future, I would just get a nice sold bore barrel. A nice .689 or .690 is a good size to use with almost every paint out there.

I AM planning on another mag, but a new one. Don't all of the ULE and custom bodies use the cocker threads?

      EDIT:
The scepter system doesn't come in a mag back according to their website today. Did they used to?

      EDIT: (again)
Neither does the J&J system... this is becoming a bummer.

Sorry, i was refferring to your Classic RT, you can use a solid bore barrel with no problems and good accuracy.

All ULE's come with cocker threading, so a kit for that would be easier to get. Scepter will make a back for your gun, it may cost a little extra but they can do it.

do not listen the canuck he does not know what he speaks of. ive used a freak now for over 2 years with nothing but good things to say about it. the freak is the best system for the mag because with the jj the smaller size bore does not allow the level 10 to fit into it.

What are these weak inserts they speak of??? I have owned a Freak kit for years now and have no so much have had a dent, ding, or any form of damage to any of my inserts. Please note I also do not throw my gear around in disgust after being caught cheating (I don't anyway!) and get pulled from the game after arguing with the ref and throwing punches at the opposing players. For those players they also make SS inserts The Freak is a great kit, get it!

I have heard of many people bending thier freak inserts when putting the tip on, its more the design, not the actual alum. On top of that the inserts are thinner and more susceptable to warpage in extremem weather(hot and cold), and will cause issues with paint sizing becuase of the expansion and contraction. The thicker th insert, the less or rather, the longer it will take to cause the type of expansion that will cause issues.

Btw, you can't tell me they dont because my warp breech on my xmag will expand and contract in extremes, and lock on to my SS Edge back.

J&J Edge kit was my personal choice simple cause they would make what I wanted, and the fact that SP isn't my favorite company(even before all the patent crap) their QC has left a LOT to be desired, and I don't believe in poor craftsmanship, hence the reason I own several mags.

This, of course is just my humble opinion. I have played 13-14yrs and I have seen many barrels come and go, and while the freak was the first, it certainly isn't the best.

JJ doesn't make a small bore barrel. Their edge kit comes with small bores, but it also comes with medium and large bores. Apparently you don't know what you're talking about. Aluminum freak inserts do actually have problems with bending, denting, warping, etc. That's why they came out with the SS inserts. However the ss versions are so much more epxensive. You can get a kit that's just as good such as the JJ Edge or MacDev Matchstick for much cheaper. A Kaner is a great kit too.

One of the great things about the Freak is that as it uses inserts instead of solid backs, you only need to buy one part to use it on a gun with different barrel threads. A Pipe kit, for example, needs a whole set of backs to be used on a different gun.

J&J didn't list Mag as a back option, but i'm told they can make one for extra... so I am now going to look into the MacDev Matchstick.

I still like the Freak because of the above comment, but I know that I'll have to be super careful to keep them in shape and maybe e-bay is not the place to get one.

ive used a freak on my automag when it was powerfeed, and when i changed it to ule, also on my sniper 2 and my imp. thats four guns with different backs and i can use the same tip.
i have never warped/bent/broke any of the inserts.
if you put the insert all the way in the back and dont throw things around on top of the inserts they will last for a very long time.
also there are ss inserts now that are stronger.

go for a solid back barrel system, you'll thank yourself later.

Personally, I'm growing less and less attached to my freak, I wish I'd just bought an AA and been done with it for my Ion. The inserts don't line-up propperly on my Freak, there's an obvious bias to one side of the barrel.
