"Club" is present-tense. "Spade", or "spayed" is past-tense, and spaying is what you do to a female. The majority of players, especially those that are likely to cheat, being male, it doesn't fit.

Not really, no. If you go back to the first strips of the comic, back when it was actually done on a dry-erase 'white board', there's some explanations.

I've started using the characters in the "advertising" since they're fairly popular and recognizible, and I can sketch up something like the T-shirt couple in an hour or two.

I love TWB! It always makes me laugh. Especially when Doc pulls out the old school book and says something most 12 year old kids wouldn't even know. Having been playing 16 years I love it!
