Alright...let me get this clear FINALLY, my dads a civil war guy and he told me about this. The confederate flag, the one we know it as, was actually the flag that was held up during battles....and people, when the war ended showed the flag in commemoration of those who fought strongly and bravely for the confederacy. This is still why it is shown today...a sign of pride and respect to those who died, it was intended for that, and while many people have forgotten this point its still true. If people wanted to support the confederate views, they would used the flag of the confederacy...not the battle flag.

One more point, the civil war wasnt even based on slavery to begin with. Abraham Lincoln only freed the slaves from the north in about 1862 or 3(if i recall correctly.) This only stated all slaves are to be freed from all lands opposing the unions...Lincoln wasnt such a great guy, he left some states, i believe maryland and maybe more(need a refresher) to allow slavery and fight for the north. It was not until the VERY end of the war that Lincoln signed the final bill outlawing slavery...

To concluce, the confederate battle flag was created even before the issue of slavery came into play in the Civil War. The war wasnt over slaves, it was over the south who wanted to secede because they were tired of losing money...agriculture was dying and cotton couldnt cut it, the factories in the north were taking in all the profits and taxing heavily on the south....so the south wanted to become its own unions.

(If this is at all "pushing it" please feel free to delete it, but i did not flamea anyone or state lies, simply the truth to the best of my knowledge.

I never said it was THE flag for the south... I said A flag. Its a flag that represents the south, period. You can't argue that. Show a confederate flag anywhere outside of the south, and ask them what it means, and they will say its a flag from the south. Not THE flag, or not an OFFICIAL flag, but it in some way represents the south, so therefore it is A flag OF the south. Its not from the west, or the north, etc, its from the south. Thats what it is associated with. Don't you people ever watch the Dukes of Hazzard? Jeez

To anyone from the south who doesnt want to be associated with the confederate flag, too damn bad. For some reason everyone thinks New Jersey is a dirty smelly state full of obnoxious people, and thats far from the truth, but that seems to be widespread opinion, so I have to deal with my state being associated with that image whether I like it or not. So you can deal with an orange piece of fabric, I think.

Interesting fact is there was a Battle flag used for a short period of time here that was a field mostly of white. With a small crescent moon in the corner. At a distance it look like a flag of total white. The sign for surrender. For obvious reasons it was soon disgaurded from use.

Not sure what you mean by this but I chose not to be. And its my right to chose. I find it unfortunate that this flag was so abused by such hateful people such as the KKK and white supremacy movement that I have to chose. But so be it.

Hey phil...dont be mad, to be totally honest, when i was in NY, almost everyone who was native north thought every southerner was a white supremacist redneck who sported the confederate flag. Now that i live in Florida i see totally the opposite and i was wrong, but most people dont understand about it, and what people think of it meaning

Well no I am not mad at all. And some of that tendency to steriotype is true! But it is also a fact that the majority of the State of SC realized that this flag represented something other than what they had intended and voted to take the flag off the capitol building to spare the feelings of the minority that saw it otherwise. That is real progress! We have fought the "War of Northern Agression" for far too long.

Also something to throw into the mess is this "Lincoln did this then and when" thing. In fact there are many document that tend to suggest that Lincoln was always an emancipationist and that he kept that fact as un-public as he could in order to get elected. Yes! they did it even then! And hoped to do this peacefully after that point. And least you "Yankee's" get snotty about this. There is also ample evidence that the leaders of the Unionist states were very worried about where all these slaves would end up. They wanted no part of taking care of them. And they established plans to board them on ships and send them off to Carribean islands to fend for themselves. Some of this actually did occur. Haiti is one of them.

So you see why we do not like to discuss politics here? So many ways to look at it. And facts enough out there to almost back up anyones side of it. No one wins. So lets get back to paintball shall we?

Cphilip - You may choose to, but that doesn't change the fact that it will continue to be associated with your state, and therefore you to a degree, based on the fact that you live there, and it originated there.

Mantis - I don't know about where you live, but my neighborhood doesn't smell 90% of NJ is nice. The main problem is that between Newark Airport and NYC (In other words, the only part of NJ that most people see) is a REALLY bad area of the state. That 15 miles or so is full of industry, swamp, and landfills. South Kearny has an odor like none other.

But if you drive even 5 minutes north, west, or south of Newark Airport, and its a different story.

I have to agree with them there....the turnpike smells like crap too. It's because you get the odor coming off from staten island when you are in NJ so people think its all garbage. I know its not, but another little misconception, but having ur state smell like garbage isnt any where near as bad as having your state thought of as "white supremicisits"

Yes yes some parts do smell...but yet it is the richest state in america.

I think we are getting far off the topic. Anyway, cphillip, I am happy at least one moderator has his or her head out of their a@@.

How the hell did this go from dicussing AO's policy of banning people, to wether or not Iranians are Arabs, to what the Confederate flag represents, to why New Jersey smells?
