I have reffed for a well known field in the area for many years. As some of you may already know I have taken a "head ref" position at a brand new county maintained paintball park. The first few weekends have had great turnout. Over 60+ people each day and this is before any ads have come out, and for word of mouth to really get around. The size of this place alone just swallows people. You hardly realize so many are there until you look at the log.
Currently we have four tournament sized manicured fields that are under stadium lighting, and completly netted. Two of these are set up with brand new sup air bunkers. We have one "retro" style spool, and hyper field that is a work in progress. The other will have something set on it in a few weeks. By fall there will be six tourney sized fields. There will be an onsite pro shop and already has a concessionary and public restrooms. Officials from the CFOA have already been out to see it and an event is in the works for (hopefully) next year.
Reading through many of the forums I find that one of the biggest gripes with players are bad reffing and unruly conditions at their local fields. I have to say I have been blessed with the availability of great fields and a tight knit paintball community in this area. It is rare to run into many of the situations others are talking about like rampant cheating, theft, physical altercations. I guess on the last I am also blessed by being a rather large and intimidating looking guy. Not that I really am, but if you didn't know me you certainly wouldn't just want to mess with me. That gives me a certain advantage in settling disputes as it were.
Being that this field is county subsidized we are even more compelled to enforce safety. The last thing we need is for someone to feel they have grounds for a lawsuit and shut this "genisis" down. At the moment I am trying to draft a set of rules and regulations that include fair punishment for breeching them. Its really nice that both the field owner and the manager of this project under the park services are giving me full backup and will not question my authority or decision in enforcing these rules.
So far we have a base set of rules that covers use of masks, barrel covers, chrono procedures, fighting, etc. If you are asked twice to put a mask/barrel cover on you are subject to sitting out games, and third warning can result in ejection from the park for the day. Fighting results in instant ejection and if the issue is severe enough the police station is litterally a block away. We chrono with ref. supervision with spot checks and mid day checks. If anyone is ever in question of a players 'speed' then we will spot check.
Cheating is an issue we are still hammering out. We have been considering everything from individual ejection all the way up to the entire team having to leave. Also considering timed suspentions from the field.
Stealing of ANY sort will result in police involvement. NO TOLERANCE
This field has the potential to be the largest and busiest in the area. With its position we feel that we have an obligation to provide the best experiance possible w/o allowing for any of what so many are truly seeing happen at their local. We have a lot of work to do still in streamlining the process. We have chrono stations left to build, the push button fill stations are due in still, and we have to get the turnstiles (entry to fields) completed.
So what do y'all think? How much teeth should we put in. We can set a precedent with this.
What have you been really impressed with at fields around as far as setup of procedure for checking in, filling, anything?
