Back after 7 years with a question.....

Ok. Here is the situation, I hope that someone can give me some info.

Back in 1997 I spent the entire summer playing paintball. I started with a CCI pump, and then moved to a spider. THen I decided to make some mods on my spider, and it leaked ever after. I only played a coupel games until '99, when I got married, and paintball was out for a few years.

However, after my experience in '97 I have pined after an 'Mag.

THen, I played paintball in spring 2005, and realized that the extra 70 pounds I gained in the interim have.......caused issues.....with my ability to play.

SO I struck a deal with my wife.

I get back to 170 pounds (my ideal weight) and I get to buy myself a new setup.

So, Im going to print out a photo of the gun I want, and put it in front of our exercise machine, and run myself till my legs fall off.

    Now here is my problem:

What picture do I put in front of our elliptical machine?

I was entranced wit hthe 'MAG back in the day. It was simple, and the coolest feature was that you didn't need to mod it. It kicked *** right out of the box.

    Now, im not so sure.

I know, I may get crucified for that statement, but let me explain, and perhaps some of y'alls can help out.

    1) Few articles list a 'MAg as a beginners gun.
    2) Everyone still sells cockers (personally, I have doubts about my ability to maintain a cocker, they used to have a "touchy" reputation, like tinker, play, tinker, play"
    3) Few places sell 'Mags.
    4) Mags seem to have graduated completely away from CO2.
    5) I have no idea what to get, when getting a mag.
    6) I refuse to go electronic. THis is not a style statement, but rather a reflection of the fact that Im lazy.

So, someone, please convince me to buy AGD. Here is what I wanted back in the day, but I don't know if AGD can deliver:

    1) $500 budget. THis includes goggles, ball cannisters, tank, marker, hopper and anything else exttra. I don't need "paintball clothes". I played in jeans and a sweatshirt. Even in the summer heat. I don't see myself wearing a neon spacesuit to play.
    2) I wear glasses. THe mask must include one of those defogging fans, so the budget is really only about $460 for everything.
    3) It needs to need minimum maintenance.
    4) It can't break.
    5) If Ican get a reactive trigger, great. Not mandatory.
    6) I prefered woodsball, but i did enjoy watching the recent speedball tourneys in ESPN. I wouldn't mind a try at that.
    7) I REALLY prefer CO2. I used a remote once, and it sucked. I spent more time trying to get it to work properly than I did playing.
    8) I need a *good* barrel.

Please keep in mind, I have only played once in the last seven years.

THe reason AGD mags caught my attention in 97 was because they were accurate, needed few upgrades, and were indestructible, rarely broke down.

    So, in summary,

Can I still get a mag that is easy to maintain, runs on CO2, and is readily available? THis forum has a lot of posts, so I see that there are still a lot of AGD fans out there.

If I don't get answers that make me feel comfortable with an AGD, then Im afraid the photo in fornt of my wlliptical macine will be a (sorry!) Tippman or one of the newer, cheap, cockers.

ALso, anyone have opinions on the cheap cockers?

    Thanks for your time.

I hope to be in full swing rec play by April '07.

I know that is a long time, but I got 70 pounds to lose. It sucks to play when I am winded after a 10 yard dash....

And THANK YOU for your responses, whatever your responses are!

Well, to put you in a general direction for mags, you pretty well have to get a classic mag, or a mag that has the "A.I.R" valve. This all includes
    Stock:
    Micromags
    Minimags
    68 Classic (or "Pro Classic")
    ...
The newer designed valves, "X" valves, Emag valves, or RT valves all need Nitrogen/HPA, or some extremely insnane setup that would pretty well turn the co2 into nitrogen...

However, almost everyone on this board will advise you to get something from a remote(which you had a bad experience with), expansion chamber or otherwise to run co2.

You will also hear people telling of the nifty "ULT"(Ultra light trigger)...Many say they are impossible to fit in classic mags, many say they drop them in...Others say you need to modify a bunch of stuff. If you are looking for something that needs NO maintanace (other than oiling )I would stay away from this.

Check out the b/s/t forms on this site, and you will find many "old school" as they call it mags under $200...

Welcome back to paintball, and welcome to AO.

you can get a classic mag for $150 used, in the Buy/Sell/Trade section here, and that leaves $350 for a mask, tank, and hopper. the newwer masks dont need antifog fans, you can get them, but you dont need them. i recomend a JT mask, get one new for $35, i have one, it works great, never fogs, good protection. for a hopper i suggest a revvy, get one used for around $40. for a tank, just about any will do, the cheapest one ive seen is $67 for HPA and its an aluminum tank. or you could opt with C02 because a classic can use that, however it needs to be antisiphon. personally ive never bought an antisiphon tank, but id expect them to run $35.

      /welcome to AO

edit; found some pics for you

      a classic mag

      a minimag

you might be able to find a classic RT thats in your budget, they look sorta like this

        Get HPA. Don't use C02.

Here's the list of everything you'll need.

Classic Mag with Intelliframe and Bicycle foregrip-$150 to $200 used. Don't buy new.
68/45 Crossfire High Pressure HPA tank-$100 used. Make sure it has a few years left on the hydro.
        12 Volt Revolution Hopper-$25 used.
Any decent barrel such as a J&J, CP, or Dye-$25 to $50 used.
Any decent pack and 4 or 5 pods-$30
        VForce Profilers-$80

I'll be blunt about it. Since you've been out of the sport for a while you've missed quite a bit.
Mags are no longer the latest and greatest. Classic mags are what I would consider low end. Do some more shopping and research and you'll find that there are many other good choices out there. Don't immediately throw away the electro idea either. I've had mechs that were more problems than electros.

          Get an Emag

Get an Emag. heres a link for a pic :

But do a search for AO member Tunaman and get a price from him.
You will have to use air, not CO2 on the Xvalve.

              Ahem.....

$500 includes the mask, tanks, tubes, pack. etc.

And to add some deatil. Im planning on getting a really nice mask.

And BTW, the mask fan is necessary. The goggles don't fog up, but my glasses do. I can'tr wear contacts.

I really need to visit the local paintball store....have a look around.

Ebay will likely be your greatest asset, alongside the Buy/Sell/Trade forums. For example, look at this:

                  ULE Automag RT

Just one of a *ton* of decently priced older mags that you can find daily in B/S/T or on Ebay. There's just about 1 day left on it, and given the current market for older 'mags, you can likely win the auction for less than $200 - A steal considering the price of the components that went into it. This one comes with a good quality barrel, so strike that off your list. Add in a $64 nitrogen tank, a $55 loader , and you've still got $190ish - shipping costs. Let's call it $160. Add $70 for a nice new mask, $45 for a fan, and $30 for a harness with tubes . You've got $15 left, and that will likely wind up being a barrel sock, a couple of spare o-rings, a bottle of Autolube, and a Coke.

                    What are you, 5'2"???

OKay, I'll try to help you out with a couple of questions in no particular order.

I've been shooting a Classic 'Mag on CO2 for about 12 years without any real problems. I've got a nice set up now with what's called a Level 10 anti-chop bolt, and an Intelliframe trigger. You can easily get a Classic 'Mag for $100 with no upgrades, or maybe one upgrade like a barrel. The level 10 kit will be more as well as the Intelliframe. You might be able to get a decent one with all 3 major upgrades for $200 ish.

To get it to run well on CO2 (and not use a remote) you'll want an expansion chamber and a tank with an anti syphon tube in it. Most local shops can install an anti syphon tube. Expansion chambers are relatively cheap. You'll need to mount the expansion chamber vertically like so:

So you'll need a vertical ASA adaptor. Easy to get but a small detail which a good dealer would know you need. Personally I'd rather go through a reputable dealer than e-bay myself. You can find good dealers here.

'Cockers are loosing popularity. The plus side to this is that you can find them cheap these days. A popular thing is to convert them to pump guns. Pump games are getting popular.

Even though I love them, I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend a 'Mag for a beginner these days. However they are very nice guns and it's nice they're not that popular either if you like being unique. With that being said, I'd lean towards recommending a Tippmann A 5 to a "beginner".

I wear glasses too and like you I can't wear contacts. I wear small framed glasses these days so I get a good air flow over my face. Without a fan my glasses hardly ever fog up. I do have a custom fan setup I made for my JT mask (out of a stock JT crosswinds mask fan), and I've been meaning to post what I did here ... but anyway, fans aren't that popular either. My best advice for buying a mask if you wear glasses ... go to a local store, and try them all on and see what fits! Some masks are just not designed for people who wear glasses. That's why I got a JT mask, it fits my face, and my glasses, well. hopefully you'll find one that fits well and can take a fan.

PM me if you live around MA ... there is an Automag Owners Day coming up, and I might have an extra 'Mag for you to try out ... it's only $10 to play too.

Ok, I have been re-sold on the mag.

Im gonna get a picture of a mag for my exercise machine.

I will post a new thread with some more specific questions, since this one seems to have cleared up my main issues.

you DO NOT need a mask fan

you need a set of Vforce Profilers or Morphs

they fog less than my loud mask with 2 fans

keeping fog away requires good mask discipline

                              wear a sweat band
put some antiperspirant on your face
and don't put the mask on top of your head when you are off field

that traps heat and humidity in the mask

500 bucks is a fairly limited budget to get fully set up with top notch gear

                              i would get an A5

really fast electro guns need HPA tanks and Halo loaders
those 2 items are about half of your budget
