eh, I have an E-mag, but I also have a mechanical mag, I suppose you could say they are both backups to my Angel but, truth be told none of my guns do I really play with more than the others (Well I have a Piranha that never gets used). My Shoebox and Mechanical mag are just as fun as my Angels, Rainmaker, E-mag, etc.
I never understood the point of a "back up" at all, why have a gun that is only used when others go down? Why not just have guns that you like and use?E-mag PF HL chrome
smart parts teardrop barrel
.68 classic centre feed
intelleframe
omega rail
light, tight gas thru grip and vert adaptor
J&J barrel

Ion as a main and tippmann 98 custom as a backup. I love tippmanns because no matter what goes wrong you just put some oil in it and it works like a charm. The worst you might have to do is replace an oring. My tippmann with soon be bumped to secondary backup by a minimag.

my backup will always be my JT Excellerator 3. For a 6 year old mech, it has never failed me and the trigger is so nice. it has a long pull, but somehow i can fire it pretty damn fast. When my RT pro cant be used (i'll always use it unless im playing with all mech wielding players) I reach for the good 'ol excellerator.

My primary all around gun: RT ULE
My Stock Class Pump: K&P Customs Scout
My Scenario gun: PPS Painter, bolt action or pump, depending on my mood.
Loaners and tinkering guns: PMI 1, WGP Black Magic Mini Cocker, Tippmann .68 Carbine, Semi auto PGP.
I don't really have back up persay for my guns, I just use what I feel is comfortable for the day. I don't use any of my tinkering guns as primaries, I have my 3 primaries set so they are comfortable and dependable. I am actually going to be selling everything but the Mag and Scout soon. Takin the plunge and giving my girl the big ring. Plus since she has used my RT, she wants a Mag of her own so she can go paintballing with me
wedding ring+gun for girl=

I have quite a few markers but nothing specatacular. I didnt mean to start a collection. I am used to having low end guns and i am a tinkerer anyway so a back up is a must for when I do something stupid. A good backup gun is not about performance imo, just raw reliability and cost.
My backup gun that I would never sell, hardly use, and can rely on 100% is my spyder Xtra. its the gun I first bought and I have kept it after upgrading. Thats ussually what I tell ppl when they start is to buy the cheapest "decent" marker they can find (I ussually say get a Victor) and play with it until you see what your style will be and buy your fancy marker. Then you always have the one you started with in case you dont like your angel or whatever.
The sad thing is that I can probably do better with my Xtra than my PM5 just because I'm used to it. Thats the real danger in whoreing is that it takes a long time to get really used to a marker and when you switch up all the time...
Right now I'm on a mission to get rid of my extra crap. When its all done hopefull I will have just my Mag, PM5, and my Spyder backup. I'm going to keep my Rainmaker to tweak on so that I leave my good guns alone. I am also going to sell my pumps and just try to get one good phantom or something.

what style of play are you doing?
rec-meh not so much
scenario-maybe
tourney-yes yes and yes
in a rec day if your gun goes down go fix it. with a mag most stuff can be fixed (assuming you dont blow up, literally blow up, the valve body and you have the seals or other pieces you need). at a scenario pretty much the same thing but you want to be out there playing as much as possible so you might want something.. but if your in tourneys you better have at least 1 back up because you might have to go man down if you cant get a stupid gun working.
ive gone off field and broken my gun down 3 times in a row at a scenario but if i were to play straight through a scenario i could blow 10 cases literally so i take a lot of breaks any way and stay at 3-4 cases (luckily we have teams around here that during final battle hand out paint)
rule of thumb (perhaps it should have been rule of wrist) is to keep your markers when you buy a new one, personally i dont go play with out at least 2 guns in my bag, usually i take all 5 (sniper 2, cocker, mag, pgp, and the old spyder that hasnt worked for a while none the less been used in a good year or 2) worst comes to worst you pull out the broken guns and fix them there if you have a catastrophic failure on a main gun
but to answer the question do mags need back ups, the pushing it to the limit thing is right on about that subject, if you dont push it to the limit you can still have issues, even the best made anything will break at some point, and you never know what will go wrong, paint is really brittle so you need to use a more gentle gun, barrels you have are way off the paint size so you want to use a gun with barrels that fit it better, the hard core factor of using 5 different guns in one day because you can, etc etc

My strange shocker gets backed up by:
Naughty dogs freestyle
Strange ion
Nyx Trix
Gen2 Freestyle
Shocktech bushy
Xmill bushy
Rt pro
and an sl68
To be honest they are not back ups; so much as an ebay obsession. I play with whatever floats my boat that day. Hell my shocker has never even failed me. Though I kinda wonder how I always end up with so much ICD stuff, nothing but headaches.
