Or what about an invitation-only membership? Or request to join that can be confirmed by any member?Originally posted by AGDYes I know, I personally delete my share of cell phone adds myself. I wonder if we can put a time delay between signing up and being able to post? Mods?

Yeah, i've got one too...
Spambots are a real problem, but i've devised a cunning plan to get rid of them on our dutch paintball forumOriginally posted by TunamanSo many of these damn suckers everyday. I deleted about 20 today and banned lots of suckers. We are trying. Thanks for helping out.
1. Go through the member list filtering all the members that have made less than 2 posts. (this will be challenging for a forum of this size, but with a couple of mods it can be done)
2. Check their email adresses (if admin can do so, not familiar with this forum software)
3. Ban all members that signed up with the following email domains: list of spam domains
4. Add all these domains to the ban filter with a wildcard like *@spambob.org
5. Check new registred (by date) members and with what email adress they regged and less than 1 post.
6. If it is a suspected email domain, delete user and add the domain to the ban filter
7. Go on untill they loose their lust for trying to post
8. Check for new members as often as you can (like in the morning, after work and before bed)
Before this, we had like 3 new spambots on the forum a day, and 20 silently present. As of now, all suspected accounts have been deleted and once in 2 days a fool tries to reg with a spam email domain and gets whiped + domain banned... Before even validating his account.
Yeah, i like the forum clean, not spammed.
It prolly wont stop the PM spam, but my guess is this bastard also regged with a questionable email adress.Comment

what about the joe's who want quick tech support on their leak coming down the barrel on their mags? I'm betting they'd be turned off by having to wait longer than a couple of hours.Originally posted by AGDYes I know, I personally delete my share of cell phone adds myself. Most of that has been covered a million times in other threads. I wonder if there are multiple accounts on a single IP? IS there a setting that will not allow multiple users from the same IP?Comment

I wasn't invited to join, and no members knew me to confirm my membership. So I would not have been able to do anything on this forum. That would have been a bummer to me and the people who I have purchased items from through the classifieds.Originally posted by paint magnetOr what about an invitation-only membership? Originally posted by __Phoenix__See, what about colleges and multiple accounts from one family? Say 2 brothers have an account and log on from the same computer. Or, more likely, you have many members from a particular college. And then there's freinds that may like to post while over another forum member friend's house. In either case the IP will be devestatingly similar or even a small chance to be possibly the same.
Now if your talking about registering from the same IP adress, like sitting down an registering 2 or 3 accounts from the same computer - that might be a viable option. However, there are always proxy servers, public wireless networks, VPN, and a host of other methods to change the IP.
As long as forums are 100% free, you can't easily stop the problem. You could make it so that a member can't send PMs until they have a post count of 10 or something. Chances are if it is a spammer, they will be easily recognized by posting spam before they hit the PM post count or that they will not bother spending time to post 10 seemingly honest posts before PMing.

I meant having the ability to log onto muliple accounts at the same time from the same IP. My fear is that these guys register multiple accounts at the sametime and use them intermentantly.Comment
