Nitro Tanks? - what are they for?

I can pretty well assume that N2 tanks in these smaller sizes were not developed for paintball originally.

Anyone know their origins and what other applications the 45/4500 and 68/4500 nitro tanks are used for?

Some are used for emergency air for pilots. If I am not mistaken, Air America used to make them for the Military..................
