If it gives a bright white spark, then most probably it's titanium. Steel gives orange sparks and stainless too, but less of it when you grind it.

Up until today I was sure of only one person on earth who possessed a fabled Titanium Automag valve....and his name was D.B. Cooper. But now for the first time ever..after EXTENSIVE testing (Primarily Spark Testing on a grinding wheel) ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you the ever elusive, always reclusive ever so sought after most rarest and specialist valve of all time....... Let the bidding begin.

      Photobucket

But seriously the PMI test we did today proved that my valve is not Titanium, it is stainless the count was about 301S/S.........the search continues

Ok, bro got another camera, so made a video of me grinding the valve (lightly)

It's kind of hard to see the difference in the sparks tho due to the lighting and the camera, but it's as good as i can get it, and dont really wanna grind the valve much more than needed.

I saw the difference, there was an orange outline around the allen key's sparks, i didn't see that on the valve's sparks. looks like it's a titanium back half, but the anno on it and everything leads me to believe that it's probably not one of the ones tom was talking about.

yea that's what i was thinking, unless diamond labs bought those valves off agd n reused the valve backs, doubtful but don't think it's impossible

I think tom would know if they did though, and i don't know why they would since the weight savings weren't much of weight savings at all. Probably just made the backs with the same mentality that agd had, but then again who knows.

I'm not sure if this was one of yours or a one-off by somebody else, and it's only a partial (if the seller is even accurate that it's Ti), but here it is besides:

item #220475269411 if the link decides to be problematic.

Actually I'm messaging the guy about it right now. It is indeed the same guy from what I can tell- he performed the same tests to prove it's authenticity in his messages as well as in his posts.

I asked him how he obtained this valve back- I'm waiting to see what he says.

The fact that the little locking pin was ground off because it didn't fit the notch seems kind of sketchy to me. If it was made by AGD, I would expect it to fit.

yes which is why I'm not claiming it to be an original AGD valve, I never have. I'm pretty sure it's made by diamond labs but google hasnt helped me confirm whether or not it is. There were no markings, laser etched or not to help me identify it.

Also, iirc classic valves from way back when didnt have properly lined up holes or something, so if this might be from that era, then that'd explain the misaligned z-lock pin.

However, as far as whether or not it's titanium, I can bet every mag in my collection on it being so, i've done every test I could short of a PMI test, all highschool lvl chemistry here: density, weight comparisons, physical attributes, the "spark" test (despite my better judgement, luckily the piece was already quite marred so doing the test did nothing overall aside from affirming my results), and I can probably do the conductivity test if I can find the tools to do so

As for where I obtained it? a trade, I was hoping for an aluminum back when I got something that didnt quite meet my expectations of an aluminum back

If only I still had my TI boomstick, I wouldnt be sellin this, but alas I sold the boomy long before I stumbled across this

If you mix match the front and back of your valves, the z-lock and on/off sometimes won't line up the way they're suppose to. I had to replace a back on a classic once due to a botch 8 hole mod and ran into this problem. I would def get a PMI done to make sure.
