    Gun design I thought up

Over the week I've been thinking about this design. It started off as basically a different version of a power tube. Then it modified into this: (not to scale)

    In rest:

    Firing:

The illustration definitely aren't perfect. I think they give you the gist of it though.

So basically air would come from the back, moving the bolt forward. Once it extends beyond that depression, air would escape into the bolt, firing the gun. Hopefully there would be enough momentum there to push the bolt far enough so that the little nub at the bottom of the bolt would seal against the other raised chamber. The rest of the air would have escaped through the bolt, so the air in that little chamber would push the bolt backwards.

    Does that make sense?

I'm not really sure how it would work, if it would work at all. It seems it would be really hard to get the little bolt nub to seal right so it would return. Also I'm not so sure how well the bolt would work when there's nothing holding the back end of it in place. I've come up with another idea to combat that, but it took me long enough to MSpaint that last one.

    So, what do ya'll think?

Nope. Thats just about every spooler out there.
Great idea. Its just that its been done. Keep it up.

Actually this seems nothing like a spooler. Spoolers have air push them to reset. This is more along the lines of a springless automag. Would you though set it up as a fully pneumatic mech or an epneu.

No, it's not quite like a spooler. One burst of air here would both fire the gun and return the bolt. A spooler would use two bursts of air.

And I haven't given much thought to what kind of valve I'd use. Probably just a solenoid valve, even though it would be pretty cool if it were all pneumatic.

The remaining air pressure would perhaps push the bolt back, till that seal is gone and that pressure escapes through the chamber too. From the drawing I see no way it would fully reset the bolt.

Hmm... that's a good point. There's a way to combat this though I think. Give me some time to make another drawing.

But as far as the concept goes, it's a pheasible idea, right?

use an electro magnetic pulse to fire the bolt back into cocked position

i mean, we can use magnets to launch roller coasters over 100 mph. how hard could it be to make magnets run off a 9volt return an ounce or 2 of mass at a reasonably rate of fire?

Yeah, I can't think of a way to fix it. Seems like it's impossible. I still like the idea of the bolt, and the idea of firing and resetting the bolt with one jet of air. I'll just have to come up with a different lay out I guess.
