Just had a quick question; I need to mill a body out for detents (would like to use Imp threaded detents, or Angel), but I have no idea what the thread ID is for these detents. Just wondering if any of the AO resident geniuses knew?

One of the few things that PBN consistently comes through on is threads.Originally posted by shorty24Just had a quick question; I need to mill a body out for detents (would like to use Imp threaded detents, or Angel), but I have no idea what the thread ID is for these detents. The following is Machinist Metric ISO Screw Thread Tap - Drill Size Chart for Metric Course and Fine thread sizes.
Angel ball detent threads ----- M10x1.00
Drill size 9 for Angel detents (or 5mm is really close)
Impulse detents aren't listed, I'll see if I can find them.
Updated:
Impulse (SP in general) detents are 3/8-16.
Use a 5/16 bit for those.Last edited by y0da900; 04-20-2007, 07:54 AM.

Please test with the M10x1 in a scrap piece first. I have found that the M10x1 is a way large for the WDP (angel) style detents. It will "fit" but with lots of slop.
I have found that drilling a 11/32" (or slightly larger size "S" drill) hole and then running a 1/8"NPT-27 tap about half way in (it is tapered, so the farther you go, the larger it gets) works perfect and is what all of the Deadlywind Chord/Dallara/Karta bodies have in them for the Angel detents.

it is way big, becasue Angel ball detents are actually 1/8" BSPP thread (British Standard Pipe Parallel).Originally posted by nicadPlease test with the M10x1 in a scrap piece first. I have found that the M10x1 is a way large for the WDP (angel) style detents. It will "fit" but with lots of slop.

I use a letter 'R' (0.3390" OD) drill for them, which is the same as the tap drill that I use for 1/8" NPT.
The nice thing about the BSPP tap is that it's a straight pipe thread, so no matter how deep you go, you get the same major and minor diameters. Makes it quite a bit more "OH ****!" proof.Ryan Shanks

That is good to know.

I am not even sure where the M10x1 started for WDP detent threads. I know the tinkers rat nest has had it listed as such for ages (I have submitted a correction to it, but it still remains). I started out buying a set of M10x1 taps, just to find out they were pretty much useless.
Yep 1/8" BSPP would be the correct thread, but NPT taps are much more common.
