    quick general paintball gun question

when firing a paintball does the bolt blow the paintball forward with air or does it ujust close the chamber as the air alone blows it forward?

Different in any of the many different types of operating systems.

In the most common, open bolt, the bolt physically pushes the ball into the barrel and then air propels the ball out of the barrel.

Closed bolt: When in rest, a ball is in the barrel and the bolt is sealing the breech.

Open bolt: When in rest, the bolt is behind the feed area. A ball is sitting with the detentes holding it in. The bolt extends, seals the breech, and fires a ball.

so in a closed bolt the air blows the bolt back instead of forward and gets another ball in and stays forward?

Yeah, pretty much. Except in a cocker an external ram pushes the bolt back, not air.

Thats a big question. The simple answer above is a good start.

Best thing to do. Look into how Tippmans and Spyders work. Both open bolt, but different. Look into mags...somewhat similar to the tippy...but different...Progress into the Autococker (closed)...Timmies, Imps, B2K/promaster,etc, are all essentially the spyder with a solenoid rather than a sear controlling ram stroke...move into Spool valves, such as Matrix, Shocker, ect....end up with a Mini, which is a bastardization of the Mag and a spool valve (IMO)....there are a few novel examples in between.
              Anywho, good luck.

Except a mini isn't a spooler. I'd assume you mean a Poppit valve.

For a broader explanation look here. http://www.deadlywind.com/tech/marke...ons/index.html

Basically everything on there uses a "spool" valve (single tube guns), or a poppit valve (2 tube guns). Except for the ATS on there which uses a nelson type valve, and the automag which is a blowforward, and the spyder which has a poppit valve that vents air to return the ram.
