I'm writing this as a warning to all potential and previous customers of Skan-line Sports/Beach City Paintball located in Costa Mesa, California.
This is a warning regarding misleading stock and shady business practices.
My first complaint stems from their lack of stock and misleading practices. As most of you will notice on their website, it shows all items will ship within 24 hours. Unfortunately this is UNTRUE. 60% to 70% of the items shown are NOT IN STOCK and as per the owners instructions, all employees are to mislead customers by telling them it is in an alternate warehouse. Skan-Line (Owned by one Greg Skanson) DOES NOT and never has had a secondary warehouse. As a matter of fact, the single facility has been down sized, as the owner found it easier to lie to customers then to actually carry products.
On multiple occasions I have been the witness of said lies, where in fact even the owner has mislead a customer, by claiming a 1 to 2 day wait while the product is shipped from a separate warehouse. Only to find that 1 or 2 days later, they finally get to the act of giving the proper vendor a call to order in the product at hand. Due to this practice, customers HAVE been on backorder for MONTHS. Backorders as old as 4 to 6 months are no uncommon thing to see around the "Office" if you can actually call it that. (Four desks with order taking stations, one of which doesn't function, and a fifth desk designed to respond to e-mail.)
The company currently lacks enough employees to properly run, as they are limited to The owner and his wife, One full time employee, one part time employee, and a single Saturday worker, who is now being paid under the table.
Aside from not being able to take orders, they also lack the funds to PAY FOR PRODUCTS which are ordered in for customers. It isn't uncommon to have to pick up the phone and lie to vendors about their order payments and to claim the person who runs the accounts payable department is unavailable, as she is only avoiding them.
In regards to shady business practices, I believe the above paragraphs give you a brief insight to some of them. Aside from those, it is also apparent when visiting their retail store, that although most of their workers (All 2 of them now) are friendly, it isn't uncommon to be eyed and spied on by the owner or his wife, who clearly do not try to hide their presence, but attempt to over hear any wheeling and dealings, of which, do not occur. Instead of actually overhearing any disrespectful acts, they instead scare off customers, by telling them if they won't buy anything that they should "Get out" and "Come back when you've got a bit more money."
The actual facilities are a joke and are mediocre at best. There is no hot water and no working bathroom for the retail customers. Aside from that, the constant smoking of the owner, his wife, and the "Manager" are enough to make your lungs bleed upon entrance. The lack of air conditioning and heat, make the facility unbearable for customers and employees during the severe summer heat of Southern California and the colder rainy days.
In regards to employees, I wish you the best of luck dealing with them. Neither carry any knowledge in the sport, and the best they can offer you in technical support is, "I don't know."
