what type of camera was used for these photos?

Any 35 MM camer will work.

However you need a setup designed by Egerton Strobe.

You leave the shutter open in a dark room.
Than you hook a strobe up to a sound relay with a delay.
When the gun is fired the strobe fires on a delay and catchs the ball in midair. The flash puts it to film.

Thats how Im guessing they did it.
They can say Im wrong but I probably am not.

Interesting images...although there are a number of broken links/removed files. Here's my question:

What gun was used for the ball in flight test photos? More importantly, what caliber was the barrel, and what type of paint was that?

Can you explain how you created the photo setup? I have no experience at analyzing photographs, but it looks like it's a single image created by exposing the film at millisecond intervals. However, at was distance was the camera from the path of the ball, and the barrel? What was the positioning of the mirror in relation to the path of the ball, and at what inclination? I see the markings remaining the same for the ball in the top image seen by the camera, but, the reflected images appear to show rotation. I'm not sure whether I'm seeing a rotation of the ball or the result of different camera angles as it flies past. It looks like the image is showing the ball rotating slowly clockwise along the barrel's lengthwise axis. Is there any chance of more photos from the same test? I wish I had found AO sooner, as all of this is ancient history, but it is quite an incredible read. Thank you for doing these tests and posting your results to us here.

I got 20 exposures, but about 10 of them are just the ball with no powder/co2 for referencing the air motion. I plan on doing another roll with what I've learned so far. These two shots show the actually CO2 air burst following the ball out of the barrel. You'll notice (or maybe not on the resize) that the white cloud only extends about 1/2in back into the barrel. These were firing's 2 & 3 off a fresh 12gram. Firings 3 & 4(not shown) shows wisps of condensed CO2 also, but very slightly.

And finally, the creme de'la creme.. (if only I had set the focus better, argghhh)

Three progressive shots with pretty good powder control. You can see the laser very well in these.

The ball has not exited yet. The pre-expelling powder set off the flash. Very cool.

The ball 1 inch down range. Again, due to different baby powder loads it's hard to make a good comparision.


So there you go. I'll probably stick another couple up here later, but these are the best I think.

Did I tell you I'd catch the ball or what?

The 4th shot clearly shows that the ball pushes a significant amount of air out the end of the barrel before exiting.
