Personally, I would just recommend a scuba compressor. A small compressor pumps 3CFM at 3000psi that's 5184ci per minute (after it gets going). They have the High pressure air filter as well as a moisture seperator. So you are getting clean bone dry air in your tanks.

I sell new compressors of this size for about $3,000 but someone mentioned above, you can pickup used ones for alot less.

Whatever you do, you need to make sure the air is clean and dry otherwise you're going to put water and maybe blow-by oil into your tank. Water will cause corrosion which will reduce the life of your tank. Oil causes a bunch of problems.

If you guys are stuck on the hydraulic cylinder thing buy that book I mentioned. They've already done all the research, already ran the numbers and ratios and they have a section on what happens when you screw up too.

For the record, I am considering building either a hydraulic booster or getting a Haskel unit to boost Argon and Helium for Divers as well as 4500psi fills for Paintball. My preference is the Haskel or Sprague booster for safety reasons.

congrats you reinvented the bycicle pump! hydralicly of course. You will need a really strong one way pump seal like that found in a hand pump for your air chamber. The rest should be pie. I say you make your air chamber out of another gutted hydro ram. Better bolt this thing to something strong other wise you might be crapping your pants mid way through a fill.
