    magnetic gun idea...

I was just thinkin about magnets the other day because now it seems like everyone and their brother wants to glue some mags to their gun somehow.

    What if..
one was to replace the main spring[of a spyder or similar gun] with a powerful magnet that fit inside the bottom tube.

put another magnet on the striker somehow. possibly make a new magnet/delrin/titanium striker to keep weight down.

would magnets be strong enough of a force to push the hammer back and open the valve?

any other ideas/suggestions? i think this would be pretty cool if it worked. just because nobody else uses magnets :)

    Well...

    A) The chamber would have to be made out of something else, or the magnet on the hammer would constantly drag on the body (since it is aluminum)

    B) You'd have to have pretty fricken strong magnets as well. And what if the magnet you got wasn't strong enough to too strong? You couldn't just clip off a small piece of the spring, you'd have to change magnets.

Currently, I'd say stick with the springs. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

whats the point in upgrading then?

i plan to solve that problem later. after figuring out if it would even work or not.

i didn't think that magnets stuck to aluminum...

you can probably replace springs with magnet assemblies in any instance where you have a short range of motion.

i dont think the eddie currents caused by moveing a magnetic feild through a single peice of conductive tubing are going to create enough resistance to cause you any major problems.

youll want to be careful that your magnets dont directly strike or are directly struck by anything hard, good exotic magnets tend to be fairly brittle.

its almost always easier to deal with the attraction of opposing poles than the repulsion of like poles. if you must use repulsion then you might concider replacing one of your magnets with a piece of diamagnetic graphite.

just some thoughts, dont know how helpful they are. best luck.

          Just consider this:

if the magnets hit each other they lose force each time

if it's an electronic gun strong magnetic fields wouldn't mess with the electronics ?
bla bla bla, does anyone read this anyway ?

Wanna have some fun? Take two spyder bodies and drop a strong magnet between them. The eddy currents generated will be strong enough to prevent the magnet from falling very quickly at all ;-) It's something called magnetic dampening. They use it on high precision scales becaure it has no sticktion at all, but does provide dampening force.

....i could've sworn i responded to the comments before nerobro's post...

nero, what do you think? was your example saying that it wouldn't work?

                That is what I'm saying.

                  yeah i figured.

i researched that eddy currents thing and thats basically what they told me

couldnt you kinda do it like speakers work... you could change the polarity to move... that stuff back and forth in the gun... or sumthing.... but then again i've had a long night and i just wok up

yes you could......but now you are talking about electro-magnets. those take watts of power to generate enough pull or push to do anything.......dont want to have to lug a car battery around :)
